Cougars claw back to ground Rockets in shootout

Never mind trading Aiden Foster, the Prince George Cougars found a way to rise up in the Okanagan.

Three second period goals from Tre Peck, Cooper Bratton and Kayden Lemire erased a two-goal deficit – setting the table for a dramatic 4-3 shootout victory against the Kelowna Rockets on Saturday in front of 4,124 fans at Prospera Place.

The host Rockets jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Jakub Frolo and Colton Lien who found the back of the net against Peyton Shore.

After trailing at the end of 40 minutes, the Rockets peppered Shore, outshooting PG by a 14-3 margin.

The increased offense led to the tying goal at the 15:32 mark as Eli Barrett buried his 3rd of the season to tie it up at 3-3.

Jett Lajoie potted the only goal of the shootout past Rockets netminder Harrison Boettiger.

Kelowna outshot PG 40-22 but went 0-for-3 on the power-play while the Cougars were 2-for-7.

Shore made 37 saves in the victory while Lee Shurgot was named second star following a three-assist performance.

PG improves to 3-3-0-1 and will return home for a four-game homestand starting Tuesday and Wednesday against the Vancouver Giants (6-2-1-1).

Both games drop the puck at 7 o’clock from CN Centre.

The Cougars then host Community Heroes Weekend Friday (7pm) and Saturday (6pm) against Tri-City (4-5-0-1).

Speaking of Foster, his new team, the Brandon Wheat Kings were slaughtered at home tonight (Saturday) losing by an 8-1 score at the hands of the Medicine Hat Tigers.

Foster began serving a two-game suspension.
