Martin’s memorable two minutes gives Tri-City weekend sweep against Cougars

Jett Lajoie almost singlehandedly drove away with a win for the Prince George Cougars.

Too bad, Grady Martin had other ideas.

The overage forward for the Tri-City Americans struck twice in the span of 2:15 in the third to snatch two points away in a 3-2 road victory Saturday night in front of 5,554 fans at CN Centre.

Lajoie scored his first of two at the 15:30 mark of the first period, finding the back of the net past Tri-City netminder Xavier Wendt for 1-0 edge. Arsenii Anisimov set the play up with a fantastic stretch pass, catching the Americans off guard.

Evan Wanner snapped right back for the Americans lighting the lamp a mere 28 seconds into the middle period spoiling what was a perfect night for newly-minted Cougars goaltender Kason Kobelka.

At 5:28 of the third, Lajoie put PG back in the drivers seat capping off a three-way scoring play that was primarily set up by Minnesota Wild prospect Kaden Lemire.

Not to be outdone, Martin answered the bell nine minutes later accepting a Koji Gibson feed to collect what was his second of the campaign.

Good things usually come in three’s and while this didn’t qualify for a hat-trick, Martin did pick up his third of the season, which turned out to be the game-winner courtesy of Gibson and Caden Campion.

Tri-City outshot the Cougars 24-21 and went 0-for-3 on the power-play while PG failed two score in both of their chances on the man-advantage.

Kobelka made 21 saves in defeat while Wendt collected 19 stops in the win.

Prince George goes 0-4 on its most recent homestand, falling to 3-7-0-1, last in the Western Conference.

The Americans, on the other hand, sit fifth with a mark of 6-6-0-1.

A two-game road trip awaits the Cougars next weekend with stops in Wenatchee (7pm) and Vancouver (4pm) Friday and Sunday.
