Wolfpack’s Scott spoils UNBC’s MBB home-opening party

A 19-7 run in the fourth quarter did in the UNBC Timberwolves men’s basketball team as they fell 84-71 to the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack on Saturday at the Northern Sports Centre.

Cason Scott was the X-Factor in the game for the Wolfpack, as the big man hooped a team-high 25 points including a 9-for-15 showing on field goals.

Jayden Stephens, Steve Stinson and Dami Farinloye also reached double-digit points for TRU.

For UNBC, Evgeny Baukin and Will Keyes made the much-anticipated returns to the lineup and didn’t disappoint.

Keyes, a third year from Kelowna, collected a double-double in a losing cause with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Baukin led UNBC with a team-high 21 points.

The Wolfpack tallied 25 points off Timberwolves turnovers, which turned out to be the main difference in the contest.

In women’s action, the Timberwolves battled back from a 25-9 first quarter deficit but were unable to complete the comeback falling 69-61 to TRU.

The Wolfpack were led by the balanced attack of Morgan Eichenberger, Olivia Randall, Sydney Vollrath and Olena Vasylenko who all recorded ten points or more in the win.

Second-year Australian import Hailey Merrigan picked up 11 rebounds for TRU.

UNBC was led by Hazel Phillips who had a team-high 14 points in defeat.

Aurora Cabrera was one point away from a double-double for the Timberwolves (9).

An off-night at the free-throw line cost UNBC two points going 15-for-26 from the charity stripe.

Both varsity basketball teams drop to 0-1 and travel to Kelowna on Friday to take on UBC Okanagan at 5 and 7pm.
