Prince George will be one of five locations in the province having an event to help women grow and navigate the business landscape.
Build, Buy, Belong: Where Local Business Grows is put on by WeBC, exploring ways women can start, buy and grow businesses, bringing together local entrepreneurs, aspiring business owners and business-support organizations to make support visible and accessible.
CEO Shauna Harper said it’s important to grow the number of women in business, especially when more investments are being made.
“There’s such huge investments by the federal government in major projects. There’s 12 across Canada, and four in northern B.C.”
“The issue with that though is that women are underrepresented in those sectors of the major projects, so how do we make sure that with this large, almost a one in a generation investment, that women don’t miss that opportunity.”
Harper noted the suppliers in those major projects that still need human resources, food, housing, and other services that see a higher number of women participation or ownership.
She said across Canada, 18 per cent of businesses are led by women, with B.C. at 32 per cent, and while it’s higher than the national average, there still needs to be intentional investment and gender led support to bring the number up to 50.
Harper noted their data found that women aren’t scared to start a business, rather they want to make sure that what they’re investing in, and how they’re growing and building it is intentional.
The event will be at The Exploration Place on Tuesday, November 17th, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
