Prince George is one step closer to local craft beer

Prince George is one step closer to getting its own craft brewery. On Monday, City Council granted CrossRoads Brewing’s application for a temporary use permit at 508 George Street. The application was unanimously supported by councillors.

Mayor Lyn Hall says the decision to grant the application was easy.

“They were looking for a one year variance so that they can get in there and start doing some work. Council didn’t have an issue with it and they want to get going on it.”

Crossroads co-owner Daryl Lieski says they’re excited about the decision but there’s still lots of work to be done before the taps start pouring.

“We’re doing a lot of legwork – purchasing equipment and financing and hiring staff. So we’ve still got six, seven months to go probably,” says Lieski. “The next step is getting all of our employees in place, getting the equipment and the renovations. We’re excited to get his thing going and offer another place for people to come in Prince George.”

Mayor Hall was enthusiastic about the new business as well.

“I’m elated about this. These guys are doing a great job. It’s in the old Tony Roma’s building – great location and it is going to be a real addition to the downtown.”

Lieski says Crossroads’ opening could be just the beginning for craft suds in Prince George.

“We did our market research. We knew Prince George is ready for something like this. There’s Bend, Oregon – if you’ve ever been there – same size as Prince George, about 80,000 people. They have 19 breweries there. We have two. Well, one and we’ll be the second.”

Mayor Hall seems to be in agreement about further opportunities for craft beer in the city.

“We’re starting to see a real trend here. Nobody would have ever thought we’d have a winery and we’ve got one. Nobody would have thought perhaps that we would have a craft brewing company and I think we’re going to see more and more of it. And people may be waiting in the wings to see how this one does.”

Crossroads Brewing plans to offer eight craft beers at its tasting room and brewery. Lieski says they’re still searching for a brewmaster but the plan is to have the doors open by the fall.
