There will soon be a new spot to wet your whistle downtown.

The ‘Kask Taproom and Eatery’ is opening up at 1230 4th Ave.

Managing partner Ross Birchall runs his consulting business right next door, and jumped on the chance when the spot opened up.

“For the first time in I can’t remember how long, all of the units in this area are full. With outside investment and development happening downtown, it’s definitely indicative of some change, positive change.”

Birchall also sits on the board of Downtown PG and is the President of the PG Rotary Club, he’s excited to be a part of a movement to keep people downtown after 5pm.

“I mean there is 10,000 people that work downtown every day Monday to Friday and they tend to just go home at 5pm, and we want to be a part of the activation of the downtown core and be a part of that change.”

He notes that shopping and entertainment districts are important parts of any city’s downtown, acknowledging that residential housing downtown would also be a big boost for the area.

Birchall will be at City Hall on Monday to extend his liquor licence hours to 3am on the weekends.

The 60 seat establishment will start with a food primary licence before going liquor primary (19+) down the road. It aims to be open by the end of the summer.

‘Kask’ will focus on BC craft beers. With two craft breweries coming to PG alongside PWB, the time is right.

“All the way out to Prince Rupert in Terrace and down to Barkerville and over to Valemount as well. There is a lot of local inspiration and a lot of great minds to tap into, no pun intended” Birchall said with a laugh.
