PG Fire Service receiving pet-saving equipment

Your cats and dogs are in better hands now that the Prince George Fire Rescue Service carries pet oxygen mask sets.

The Happy Dogs Legacy Campaign is giving the local Service 12 sets, which three oxygen masks of different sizes, tubing, a training DVD, and educational materials.

The campaign’s Elisha McCallum says it’s special seeing it all come together, especially so quickly.

“This is a really exciting culmination of a lot of months of planning and fundraising and really waiting for things to get across the finish line. This is very heartwarming and it’s very exciting to know that this piece of equipment will be on First Responsive vehicles across the province.”

Happy Dogs started in June after a Burnaby house fire killed seven dogs and two cats in May. The campaign raised $40,000 since conception, thanks to online a PetFundr account, an online Facebook auction, individual donations, and a help from the Wag’N 02 Fur Life Program’s Pet Oxygen Mask Initiative.

“Knowing that the dog community that we are all part of is so widespread and knowing that all of those people have the potential to benefit from that new piece of equipment being in their region is an amazing thing. I really can’t quite put it into words.”

Prince George is one of 95 BC fire districts receiving some of the 328 mask set. Local Deputy Chief Blake King says the sets have arrived. They’ll be equipped on the trucks after firefighters get training from a veterinarian.

McCallum adds any other fire service that wants a set can contact the campaign.
