Preliminary enrolment numbers are up in School District 57

The Prince George School District released their preliminary enrolment numbers for the 2016-17 calendar year this evening.

There are currently 12,841 students in SD57, an increase of 0.88% from last year.

Trustee Sharel Warrington says she’s happy with what she sees, but there are areas of over-enrolment that will create some issues.

“The difficult points are the pressure points in our communities; our schools where schools are at capacity, space is an issue. It puts challenges on your administrators and challenges on your teachers.”

The main affected area is the schools in the DP Todd Family, which includes the Secondary School, Quinson Elementary, Foothills Elementary, and Heritage Elementary.

All have a combined five portables to meet overcapacity needs as they’re over the maximum number of students by 1.5%.

Warrington adds high schools in Prince George however, are not entirely maxed out.

“High schools like DP Todd are at capacity, Duchess Park is over-capacity, PGSS on the other hand is under-capacity, so there’s movement in our high schools, but we still need to be watching.”

Duchess Park Secondary is an area of concern as the school is 116 students over their limit, but no additional portables have yet been needed with the issue.
