UNBC women beat Bobcats, men split Brandon series

The UNBC Timberwolves basketball squads headed as far east as they could this past weekend, each playing back-to-back road games at Brandon University.

For the women, they’re leaving Manitoba with a clean sweep of the Bobcats, winning close battle of 66-65 on Friday, and 76-71 Saturday night.

Import players Maria Mongomo (Spain, Third-year) and Vasiliki Louka (Greece, Fourth-year) recorded double-doubles in both games.

Mongomo led UNBC in scoring with a combined 41 points.

The lady Timberwolves catapult their record to an even 8-8, sitting alone in ninth place in Canada West.

On the men’s side, UNBC swindled two points over the weekend, beating Brandon on Friday by a score of 85-79.

However, the home team would bring some trouble for the T-Wolves, ultimately losing 89-76.

Second-year forward Vova Pluzhnikov led the way for UNBC, draining 37 total points in the two nights.

Prince George native Tyrell Laing came on the court as the sixth man in both games this weekend, putting up a combined 17 points in the process.

The men’s record now sits at 7-9 for the 11th spot in the Canada West standings.

UNBC will travel to Vancouver Island next weekend to take on the University of Victoria; Friday at 6PM and 8PM, and Saturday at 5PM and 7PM.
