Hart Highland Residents Sign Petition Against The New Downtown Pool

A petition has been started by residents of the Hart Highland area to get the city to build a swimming pool in their part of town instead of downtown.

Rather than spend $35 million to build a new pool near the present location of the Four Seasons pool, people think the city should use the available land in the Hart.

Paul Serup, who started the petition, says building in their area would benefit their community.

A proposed location for a new Four Seasons Pool

“People would really appreciated a pool up here because they have children, they have to drive down to the Four Seasons or the Aquatic Centre in the bowl and if there was a pool up here then it would make it easier for families.”

This came to light after a referendum vote took place on if the city should build a new pool entirely.

In the petition it claims the city doesn’t have a strong endorsement for the new pool and voter turnout for the referendum was so low(14 per cent) that just under 9 per cent of eligible voters gave consent to spend the money, meaning there was 91 per cent of people who didn’t agree.

Serup is hopes this shows the city, Hart residents are interested in this idea.

“They need to feel some political pressure and hopefully it can be brought to bear and they see fit to build a pool up here.”

The petition also says the estimated $10 million to repair the Four Season pool roof and wheel chair access will serve that area for years. Then use the other $25 million to build on available land in the Hart.
