SUPER BOWL 52:

Philadelphia Eagles     41    New England Patriots     33

First Super Bowl title for the Eagles, who won their three post-season games as underdogs.

It is Philadelphia’s first NFL title since its 1960 NFL Championship victory.

MVP Nick Foles was 28 of 43 for 373 yards with three touchdowns; he also caught a TD pass.

The 1,151 combined yards mark the most in any game (regular season or postseason) in NFL history.

Tom Brady threw for 505 yards, the most ever in a Super Bowl, but he fumbled on a sack by Brandon Graham (with his team trailing 38-33) with just over two minutes left.

Brady is the 1st QB in NFL history to lose a game with at least 500 passing yards, three TDs and zero interceptions (regular season or playoffs).

Each of the last nine players to win NFL MVP and play in the Super Bowl that same season have all lost, including Brady this season.

 

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars earned just three out of a possible 12 points with a 1-4-0-1 record on their Prairie road trip.

The victory came Friday in Brandon by a 3-2 score over the Wheat Kings which was followed by a 4-1 loss Saturday in Moose Jaw against the WHL leading Warriors.

The (19-27-4-4) Cougars, who are 13 points out of a playoff spot with just 18 games left, host the Kamloops Blazers Friday and Saturday at CN Centre.

Former Cougar Justin Almeida was named first star after he scored the winner on the power-play in the second period and added two assists.

Taylor Gauthier had his second straight strong performance in goal with 44 saves as Moose Jaw outshot Prince George 48-23.

17-year-old Ilijah Colina scored twice, including the game winner with 2:23 left in the third.

Jared Bethune tallied short-handed and added a pair of assists for the Cougars who trailed 2-1 after two.

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings began a five game home-stand with a pair of victories over the Chilliwack Chiefs; 3-2 on Friday and 4-3 in overtime on Saturday.

With eight regular season games left, the Spruce Kings lead the Mainland Division by seven points over the Surrey Eagles and by eight over the Langley Rivermen.

Ben Poisson scored 23 seconds into overtime and Blake Hayward added a pair of third period goals for the Spruce Kings, who swept the doubleheader before 714 fans at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena (RMCA).

Spruce Kings raced out to a 3-0 lead in the second period before a season-high home crowd of 1,443.

The Cariboo Cougars posted a 3-2 win (Saturday) and a 4-4 tie (Sunday) against the Greater Vancouver Canadians in Richmond.

The (24-5-3-0) Major Midget Cougars are in first place by two points over the (23-4-2-1) Valley West Hawks.

Cariboo has eight games left and Valley West has 10 to play.

The (21-25-6) Vancouver Canucks play Tuesday in Florida to begin a four game six day road trip.

 

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

The UNBC Timberwolves earned a berth in the Canada West basketball playoffs in the men’s and women’s divisions for the first time in the same season.

The 10-10 UNBC men and the 9-11 UNBC women will both play on Thursday night against the Wesmen at the University of Winnipeg (women at 4PM PT and the men to follow at 6) with winners to move on to the quarter-finals.

The Timberwolves finished 11th in men’s rating percentage index (RPI) rankings among playoff teams while the Lady Timberwolves were 10th out of 17.

Winnipeg was 14-6 in the women’s division and seventh in RPI.

The Wesmen were 10-10 in the men’s standings, but sixth in RPI.

 

SNOWBOARDCROSS:

Meryeta O’Dine of Prince George placed 14th out of 30 in the Snowboardcross World Cup race Saturday and 9th in the Ladies’ Snowboard Cross Qualification on Sunday in Feldberg, Germany.

The 20-year-old O’Dine, who will compete this month at the Olympics, is sixth and top Canadian in the World Cup standings.

 

TRACK:

High Jumper Alyx Treasure of Prince George placed sixth out of eight with a leap of 1.89 metres at an international meet in Karlsruhe, Germany.

It was her third indoor track competition in the past 10 days in Germany and the Czech Republic.

The 25-year-old Treasure now prepares for upcoming meets this month in Boston and Glasgow, Scotland.

She will represent Canada at the Commonwealth Games in April in Australia.

 

CURLING:

Jennifer Jones of Manitoba captured the National Scotties Tournament of Hearts for the sixth time, tying her with Colleen Jones of Nova Scotia for the all-time record.

Manitoba beat Wild Card (Kerri Einarson) 8-6 in the final in Penticton to advance to the Ford Women’s Curling Championship March 17-25 in North Bay, Ontario.

Nova Scotia (Mary-Anne Arsenault) finished third.

BC (Kesa Van Osch) ended up with a 4-7 record.

Sean Geall of Kelowna won his second BC men’s curling championship.

Geall beat defending champion Jim Cotter of Vernon 9-7 in an extra end in the final in Parksville.

Cotter had won six of the last seven provincial crowns.

Geall will represent BC at the 2018 Tim Hortons Brier, March 3rd to 11th in Regina.
