PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

17-year-old defenceman Ty Smith was a plus seven with seven points (two goals and five assists) as the
(34-21-3-2) Chiefs enjoyed period leads of 2-0 and 6-0.

Spokane swept the four game season series, outscoring Prince George 24-7.

It was the 12th straight game that the Cougars have failed to score the first goal.

Brogan O’Brien and Aaron Boyd tallied for the (20-32-4-4) Cats.

Each team had 34 shots and neither team scored on the power play.

The Cougars, who have lost 13 of their last 16 games, visit the (31-21-7-1) Tri-City Americans tonight before hosting Kelowna on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Dustin Manz snapped a 1-1 tie with 3:57 left in the third period.

Evan DeBrouwer 30 saves as Chilliwack outshot Prince George 31-20.

Same two teams meet again tonight in Chilliwack and they could also meet in the first round of the playoffs.

The (31-17-4-4) Spruce Kings start the best of seven first round playoff series at home on March 2nd and 3rd against the fourth place team in the Mainland Division, either Chilliwack or Surrey.

Fans 19 and over who purchase tickets for both Games 1 and 2 at the Spruce Kings office Monday to Friday, 12PM to 4PM will be entered into a draw for a Mega 50/50 Lottery Ticket as part of the Spruce Kings Show Home.

Ticket Prices for the entire playoffs will be $15 for Adults, and $12 for Students/Seniors.

Fans who purchase both Game One and Two tickets however, will get the package for $20.

CARIBOO COUGARS: 

The (27-6-3-0) Cariboo Cougars visit the (17-14-2-1) Vancouver NW Giants today (11:30AM at UBC) and Sunday (9AM in Burnaby).

The Major Midget Cougars, with four regular season games remaining, conclude on March 10th (3PM) and 11th (10AM) in Kelowna against the Rockets.

Cariboo is in second place in the BCMML, two points behind the (28-4-2-1) Valley West Hawks, and the Hawks have a game in hand.

Derick Brassard is joining the Pittsburgh Penguins from the Ottawa Senators as part of a three-team deal that also involved the Vegas Golden Knights.

OLYMPICS:

Canadian Sebastien Toutant captured gold in the first men’s snowboard big air final at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

It’s the 11th gold medal of the Games for Canada, three off the record of 14 set eight years ago in Vancouver.

Short track speed skater Kim Boutin will be Canada’s flag-bearer for the closing ceremony. The 23-year-old Boutin captured three medals, a silver and two bronze in her first Olympics.

Canada beat the Czech Republic 6-4 today in the men’s Olympic hockey bronze medal game.

It is the 29th medal (11 gold, 8 silver and 10 bronze) for Canadian athletes at the Games.

The Olympic Athletes of Russia will go against Germany for men’s hockey gold tonight at 8:10 (PT).

Northern BC girls have concluded their events in the Olympics.

Sarah Beaudry of Prince George was part of the Canadian women’s 4x6km Biathlon Relay team that placed 10th out of 18 on Thursday.

The 23-year-old Beaudry finished 29th out of 87 athletes in the women’s Biathlon 15-km individual race on February 15th.

Megan Tandy of PG, part of the Biathlon team, competed in one race and finished 57th out of 87 in the 7.5-km Sprint on February 10th.

Jamie Macdonald of Fort St. James was one of five members of the Canadian women’s short track 3000m relay team that was disqualified after a massive collision during the finals of the event.

The 23-year-old Macdonald did not race in the final but did compete in Heat One on February 10th where Canada placed second to qualify for the final.

Macdonald participated in one individual race which ended with a crash on February 10th in the women’s 500 metres preliminary.

A minor concussion suffered in training prevented Meryeta O’Dine of Prince George from competing in the women’s snowboard cross on February 15th.

 

High School Basketball:

The host Duchess Park Condors have qualified for the final of the (four-team) north central zone triple-A boys basketball championship.

The Condors, ranked sixth in B.C., need one more victory to advance to the Provincials.

 

CANADA WEST BASKETBALL:

Cedars Christian grad Kayla Gordon led the Trinity Western University Spartans to a 67-60 victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies to tie the best of three Canada West women’s basketball semi-final series 1-1.

Gordon, a third-team all-star, scored 17 points and added 13 rebounds.

The Huskies took the opener 75-62 with Gordon hooping eight points and six boards.

The third and deciding game will be played tonight in Saskatoon.

In the other semi, the Regina Cougars beat the Calgary Dinos 61-58 (Thursday) and 66-60 (Friday) to sweep the series 2-0.

On the men’s side in Canada West basketball, the Calgary Dinos beat the UBC Thunderbirds 98-71 (Thursday) and 87-84 (Friday) to take the semi-final series two straight.

The top-ranked Alberta Golden Bears crushed the Lethbridge Pronghorns 109-66 in the opener.

Game two will be played tonight in Edmonton.

The Alberta men beat the UNBC Timberwolves 98-64 and 80-41 in the quarter-finals last week in Edmonton.

 

NBA:

Milwaukee  122  Toronto  119  (OT)

The loss snapped Toronto’s seven game win streak.

The (41-17) Raptors lead the Eastern Conference by one game over the (41-19) Boston Celtics.

 

BC Winter Games:

Competition continues today and wraps up Sunday at the 2018 BC Winter Games in Kamloops.

More than 1,200 athletes, aged nine to 17, are competing in 19 different sports.

In addition, over 340 coaches and close to 200 officials are also on hand for the 29th BC Winter Games.

 

Special Olympics:

Special Olympics BC-Prince George will host a Regional Qualifier for Snowshoeing Sunday at Otway starting at 10AM.

Top athletes from the meet will be in line to advance to the 2019 Special Olympics BC Provincial Winter Games in Vernon.
