Spring clean up efforts in Prince George continue after weekend melt

It’s been a busy few days, to say the least for the City of Prince George as they unclog drains at a rapid pace.

According to the city, they cleared over 80 storm drains between Friday and Monday, which saw 50 puddles reported.

“We have another total of 250 catch basin service requests from the public that we’ve got closed already, we still have 100 open at this time and 75 of those have been dispatched out with eight different crews working on that,” says Jon LaFontaine, Utilities Director.

He says the volume of work varies from year-to-year.

The workload is higher this year because of the larger volume of snow in 2018.

“We have some list of some of the higher priority catch basins that we know are issues year after year and we start to get out before that warm weather comes and we start opening things up as those leads are thawed just to help mitigate the number we are dealing with.”

Some of the most common problems that cause issues for catch basins include leaves trapped under frozen water, cardboard and plastic bags.

There are roughly 40 people ready to tackle over 5,500 storm drains in our city.
