Prince George to be a part of National Torch Run ahead of 2019 Canada Winter Games

Prince George will be able to look back fondly at the 2015 Canada Winter Games with pride one more time.

The northern capital will be one of many stops when the National Torch Run is held across Canada ahead of the 2019 games taking place in Red Deer, Alberta.

It will be a chance relive some fond memories.

“I will be able to do some reminiscing about the games that took place here in 2015, which really was an opportunity for us to showcase our city in 2015 and our sporting facilities along with what we’re all about here in Prince George so I’m very excited about this,” says Mayor Lyn Hall.

A lot of memories were captured during the games three years ago, but Hall adds there’s one thing that stands out the most.

“However long the torch is here we’re going to have a celebration and what I think the games meant to me that I remember the most along with the residents is all the green jackets that represented our volunteers and was really a trademark as a recognition of the games.”

“It was just a great time in the city and I couldn’t have been prouder to be a part of the hosting group that put on the games and it certainly put us on the national stage.”

Hall says being a part of something like this could open the door to hosting the games a second time.

“It’s certainly a possibility. We’re always looking to attract major events to come to Prince George and on the sporting scene, the Canada Winter Games couldn’t have been a bigger event for us to host but certainly now that we’re looking at a bid for the 2020 Tim Hortons Brier that’s another significant sporting milestone for Prince George.”

The relay is slated to begin this fall on Ottawa’s Parliament Hill and will then visit 40 communities before the opening ceremonies.
