NHL:

Washington Capitals  3  Vegas Golden Knights  2

Stanley Cup Final tied 1-1.

Braden Holtby made 37 saves, including a highlight reel stop with just under two minutes left in the third.

Diving to his right, Holtby stopped Alex Tuch’s point-blank shot with his stick to preserve the victory.

Lars Eller had a goal and two assists.

Alex Ovechkin (13th of the playoffs) and Brooks Orpik also scored for the Capitals.

It was Orpik’s first goal in 220 games, ending the longest drought in the NHL.

Brett Connolly of PG played just seven-and-a-half minutes for Washington and did not get a point but he was on the ice for the game-winner.

James Neal and Shea Theodore replied for the Golden Knights, who got 23 saves from Marc-Andre Fleury.

Washington sniper Evgeny Kuznetsov, who leads the playoff scoring race with 25 points, took a big hit from Brayden McNabb and left the game holding his left arm.

He did not return with what the team called an upper-body injury.

The Caps won their ninth playoff road game, one shy of the NHL record.

The best-of-seven series switches to Washington for Games Three and Four Saturday and Monday.

SASKATOON BLADES:

Mitch Love of Quesnel signed a four-year contract to become head coach of the Saskatoon Blades.

The 33-year-old Love comes to the Blades after being an assistant coach the last seven seasons with the Everett Silvertips.

He takes over from Dean Brockman who was fired after the Blades missed the playoffs for the fifth straight year.

Love played five seasons in the WHL and another five in the AHL.

The Edmonton Oil Kings, Swift Current Broncos and Kamloops Blazers continue to look for a head coach, while Kamloops and the Prince George Cougars have not yet named a general manager.

 

NBA:

The Golden State Warriors are a 12 1/2-point favorite over the Cleveland Cavaliers in the opener of the NBA Finals tonight (6PM) in Oakland.

The Warriors are the largest Finals favorites in the last 16 seasons.

Kevin Love has recovered from a concussion and will play for the Cavs this evening.

Toronto is just 3-11 in its last 14 games against division rivals.

The 25-31 Jays finished May without posting back-to-back victories, the first time in 39 years they have gone a calendar month by not winning two in a row.

They are 2-4 on a nine-game road trip that continues Friday in Detroit.

 

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

The UNBC Timberwolves have added 17-year-old goalie Daniel Zadravec of Victoria to their team for the 2018 Canada West men’s soccer season.

The six-foot-two Zadravec is currently competing in Division One of the Vancouver Island Soccer League.

He is set to graduate from Reynolds Secondary and is a three-time recipient of the school’s Centre for Soccer Excellence Dedication Award.

FRENCH OPEN TENNIS:

24th seed Denis Shapovalov, the last Canadian left in the singles draw, has been knocked out at the French Open.

The 19-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ontario lost in the second round in four sets to world No. 70 Maximilian Marterer of Germany.
