He was the first of two defenceman drafted in the Top 10, the other one going to Vancouver.

The Canucks picked Quinn Hughes from the University of Michigan at number seven; he was also a member of the US Men’s National Hockey development program.

The Orlando, Florida native tallied 29 points (5G, 24A) in 37 games in his freshman season with the Wolverines and won a bronze medal with the Americans at the 2018 World Junior Championships.

Only two WHL players were selected in the first round; Defencemen Ty Smith of the Spokane Chiefs was taken by the New Jersey Devils and Alexander Alexeyev of the Red Deer Rebels was the last pick on opening day by the Stanley Cup-champion Washington Capitals.

###

The Vancouver Canucks re-signed Markus Granlund to a one-year, one-way contract.

The Swedish forward’s new deal is worth more than $1.4 million.

###

Before the draft began, the Washington Capitals dealt Defenceman Brooks Orpik and Goaltender Philipp Grubauer to the Colorado Avalanche.

In exchange, the Stanley cup champions are getting a second-round pick this year, the 47th overall.
