HOCKEY CANADA:

Canada’s Under-18 hockey team skunked Switzerland 10-0 in its opener at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Edmonton.

Nolan Maier of the Saskatoon Blades earned the shutout as the Canadians outshot the Swiss 48-15.

Taylor Gauthier of the Prince George Cougars is expected to start in net for Canada tonight when they face Slovakia (6 PM).

Gauthier allowed four goals on 32 shots in Saturday’s 4-3 exhibition loss against the Czech Republic.

There are 22 players on the Canadian team, 11 of them from the WHL.

Saskatoon Blades head coach Mitch Love of Quesnel is one of the Canadian assistant coaches.

 

BC BASEBALL PROVINCIALS:

(U-15 WEST BANTAM DOUBLE-A CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE LOWER MAINLAND)

Prince George LTN Contracting Bantam Knights won the West Division but placed second overall in the province at the BC Baseball U-15 bantam double a championship in Burnaby and Richmond.

PG lost the final 9-8 against the East Division champion Vancouver Expos.

The Bantam Knights won the West Division final 9-8 over Surrey after knocking off Tri-City 7-3 in the semi-final.

Prince George went 4-0 in the round robin (13-11 over Burnaby, 14-4 over Cloverdale, 11-0 over Vancouver Community Mounties and 14-1 over Triangle Vancouver Island).

(U-18 MIDGET DOUBLE-A CHAMPIONSHIP IN MISSION)

After going 4-0 in the round robin, the defending champion Prince George Surg Med Knights lost 7-4 to Aldergrove in the semi-finals at the BC Baseball U-18 midget AA championship in Mission.

Aldergrove went on to win the provincial final 5-4 over Ladner.

In the round robin, the Midget Knights beat Ladner 6-5, Vancouver Minor 10-0, Kamloops 13-0 and Ridge Meadows 12-6.

 

CANADIAN NATIVE FASTBALL IN REGINA:

The Big Guy Lake Blazers team, which included several Prince George players, lost 3-1 to the Westbank Cardinals in the semi-finals of the senior men’s division at the Canadian native fastball championship in Regina.

Westbank earned $12,000 after going on to repeat as national champions.

Big Guy Lake ended the tournament with a loss against the host Golden Hawks of Regina to end up with an overall 3-2 record.

In the round robin, the Blazers won all three of their games: 8-4 over Peguis Redmen, 2-1 over the Little Black Bears and 15-0 over the TM Chiefs.

 

MLB:

The (51-60) Toronto Blue Jays host the (79-34) Boston Red Sox tonight to begin a six-game homestand.

The Jays went 5-5 on a 10-game road trip after taking three of four from the Seattle Mariners.

The Red Sox have the best record in the majors.

The (65-48) Mariners are two games back of the Oakland A’s for the final AL wild-card spot.

 

CFL:

Week Eight of the CFL season concluded with the Calgary Stampeders staying unbeaten after that 27-18 victory over the BC Lions.

The Stampeders are 7-0 for the first time in 23 years.

The 2-4 Lions host the 5-2 Edmonton Eskimos on Thursday.
