NHL:

The 6-6-3 Chicago Blackhawks have sacked head coach Joel Quenneville.

He has been replaced by Jeremy Colliton, who becomes the 38th head coach in franchise history.

Colliton had been coaching the Hawks AHL farm team in Rockford.

The 60-year-old Quenneville won three Stanley Cups during his 11-year tenure with the team.

Former Vancouver Canucks coach Willie Desjardins will make his debut as the LA Kings head coach tonight at home against the Anaheim Ducks.

The Kings sacked  head coach John Stevens and assistant coach Don Nachbaur of Prince George after a league-worst 4-8-1 start.

The Vancouver Canucks begin a six-game road trip tonight in Detroit against the 4-8-2 Red Wings.

Canucks winger Brock Boeser won’t play against the Red Wings due to a groin injury.

He is listed day-to-day.

Vancouver will also visit Boston Thursday, Buffalo Saturday, NY Rangers Monday, NY Islanders Tuesday (Nov 13th), and Minnesota (Nov 15th).

The 9-6 Canucks have won three in a row.

Winnipeg and Calgary are the only Canadian teams idle tonight in the NHL.

Toronto hosts Vegas, Montreal is at the NY Rangers, Ottawa entertains New Jersey and Edmonton is at Tampa Bay.

 

CHL CANADA-RUSSIA SERIES:

(Game One in Kamloops)

Team WHL  2  Russia  1

Former PG Cougar Justin Almeida of the Moose Jaw Warriors left the game early in the first period and did not return.

The 19-year-old Almeida was on the receiving end of a cross-check to the back from a Russian defenceman.

He won’t suit tonight when the same two teams play in Langley.

The six-game series shifts to the OHL for two games on Thursday and Monday.

The series concludes with two games against the QMJHL on November 13th and 15th.

 

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

(WHL)

The 7-7-1-2 Prince George Cougars play their next two games in Langley against the (12-3-2) Vancouver Giants Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

The Giants lead the BC Division and Western Conference standings.

The Cougars are coming off a 2-0 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds where Taylor Gauthier made 37 saves for his first career WHL shutout in front of 3,585 hometown fans on Mega Jackpot and Pink in the Rink night.

Prince George is third in the BC Division, three points ahead of both Kamloops and Kelowna.

The Cougars are also one point in front of Seattle in the Western Conference.

Former Prince George Cougars defenceman Jonas Harkins has been released by the Regina Pats.

The 18-year-old Harkins was dealt to the Pats from the Cougars on January 5th in a trade that saw the rights to Jesse Gabrielle go to Regina.

Harkins had one assist in 10 games this season.

The son of former Cougars GM Todd Harkins has two assists in 34 career regular-season WHL games.

 

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

(BCHL)

The Prince George Spruce Kings host the 9-10-1 Langley Rivermen Friday and Saturday.

The 14-6-0-1 Spruce Kings, coming off a 3-2 overtime victory over Penticton, are tied with Coquitlam for second in the Mainland Division, five points behind Chilliwack.

Ben Brar of Prince George has 16 goals, which is second in the BCHL behind Kevin Wall of Chilliwack who has 19.

 

CARIBOO COUGARS:

The 7-3-2 Cariboo Cougars have won five in a row after a sweep of the South Island Royals in Saanich: 6-3 Saturday and 4-3 Sunday.

The Major Midget Cougars are in fourth place in the BCMML, four points out of first.

Cariboo will visit the (10-4) Okanagan Rockets Saturday night at 5 and Sunday morning at 10 in Kelowna.

 

CARIBOO COUGARS MINOR MIDGET:

The Cariboo Cougars Minor Midget team is 7-1-1 and tied with the Okanagan Rocket for first place.

The Minor Cougars, fresh off three wins in as many days against the Vancouver NW Hawks, are off until they visit the (5-3-1) Thompson Blazers Minor Midget on November 16th, 17th and 18th in Chase.

 

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

The UNBC Timberwolves are 4-0 in Canada West women’s basketball after a sweep of the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen; 75-68 (Friday) and 90-75 (Saturday).

The UNBC men’s basketball team is 3-1 following a split against Winnipeg; an 84-82 Timberwolves victory (Friday) followed by a 96-81 loss (Saturday).

The UNBC basketball teams are idle on the long weekend.

They return to action on November 16th and 17th with home games against Trinity Western University (TWU) Spartans.

 

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL:

PGSS Polars quarterback Braden Reed is the BC Lions BC High School Player of the Week.

Reed rushed for over 200 yards and had five touchdowns in a convincing 49-8 victory over Kelly Road in the PG Bowl.

In addition, on defence he had nine tackles and a forced fumble.

The Polars will host the Samuel Robertson Technical Titans of Maple Ridge Saturday in the opening round of provincial BCSSFA Double ‘A’ Varsity playoffs at Masich Place Stadium.

Also on Saturday at Masich, Kelly Road will meet the G.W. Graham Grizzlies at 11AM and the junior varsity College Heights Cougars will tackle the South Kamloops Titans at 2:30PM in a first-round playoff game.

The Titans are 4-4 while the Cowboys dropped to 3-5.

 

CFL:

After a fourth-place finish in the West with a 9-9 regular season record, the BC Lions gear up for the playoffs.

The Lions visit the Hamilton Tiger-Cats Sunday in the East semi-final with the winner to face the Ottawa RedBlacks.

The West semi on Sunday afternoon has Winnipeg at Saskatchewan with the winner to meet Calgary.

The 10-1 Raptors conclude a four-game Western road trip Wednesday in Sacramento against the 6-4 Kings.

Toronto and Golden State share the best record in the NBA followed by Denver at 9-1 and Milwaukee at 8-1.
