BCHL: (Mainland Division semi-final)

The scene has shifted to Coquitlam, with the Prince George Spruce Kings ahead of the Express
2-0 in the best-of-seven opening round series.

Games three and four will be played tonight and Tuesday.

Lucas Vanroboys scored on a power play at 18:16 of overtime in front of 1,241 fans in P.G.

Ben Brar tied the game at 2 for Prince George on a power play and with the goalie pulled at 18:27 of the third period.

The Spruce Kings have won their last 10 home games and have not lost at the RMCA since December 15th.

Prince George has won 14 of its last 15 games overall.

Layton Ahac (with the winner) and Ben Poisson each notched a goal and an assist in front of a hometown crowd of 1,267.

WHL: 

The Prince George Cougars have dropped five straight after they lost a pair of games on Vancouver Island to the Victoria Royals 4-3 and 5-2.

The Royals scored three unanswered goals in the third, two of them by Phillip Schultz, the first 14 seconds into the period and the insurance goal at the 5:49 mark.

Victoria clinched a playoff spot and second place in the B.C. Division.

Josh Maser (with his team high 28th) and Jack Sander (with his 2nd) scored for the Cougars in the second period after Victoria jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead.

The (33-25-2-2) Royals won eight of nine games in the season series between the two teams.

Prince George outshot Victoria 34-32 but the Royals went 2/5 on the power play while the Cats were 0/3.

Taylor Gauthier blocked 27 of 31 shots in taking the loss in net.

The 17-39-5-3 Cougars have lost 22 of their last 23.

Prince George is 1-9-1-1 since general manager Mark Lamb took over as interim head coach.

The Cougars are 19th out of 22 teams in the WHL, three points ahead of Regina.

The Cougars have just four games left to complete their season: Friday and Saturday against the Portland Winterhawks at CN Centre, plus a home and home against the Blazers, March 15th in Kamloops and the 16th in Prince George.

Ex Cougar Kody McDonald scored twice, including the game-winner, his 20th goal of the season at 4:26 of the second period. He also added an assist.

It was the second straight game against Prince George that McDonald tallied a pair of goals.

BC MAJOR MIDGET LEAGUE: 

Cariboo Cougars  5  North Island Silvertips  2  (Sunday)

The 25-8-5 Major Midget Cougars are in 3rd place in the 11-team league with two regular season games left, just one point back of both the (25-7-4-2) Vancouver NE Chiefs and the (27-9-1-1) Fraser Valley Thunderbirds.

Cariboo will conclude on the road at the 6th place Vancouver North West Hawks Saturday night at 7:30 and Sunday morning at 10:45 in North Vancouver.

Fraser Valley will host 10th place North Island while the NE Chiefs entertain the 5th place Thompson Blazers on March 9th and 10th.

 

BC MINOR MIDGET LEAGUE: (Playoff action at Kin 2)

The Cariboo 15-year-olds win the best of three quarter-final series 2-0.

The Minor Midget Cougars will visit the second place Fraser Valley Minor Midget Thunderbirds in the best of three semi-final Friday, Saturday and if needed Sunday.

NHL:
(3 Canadian teams in action Sunday)

Vegas Golden Knights  3  Vancouver Canucks  0

Jacob Markstrom made 45 saves while Marc-Andre Fleury posted his second straight shutout by blocking 19 shots.

The Golden Knights scored all three goals in the second period.

Fourth straight loss for the Canucks, who have fallen eight points out of the final wild-card playoff spot with just 16 games left (11 home and 5 away).

The 27-30-9 Canucks host Toronto Wednesday, play at Edmonton Thursday and entertain Vegas on Saturday.

Just a pair of NHL games tonight: (40-21-4) Toronto at (41-17-7) Calgary and (28-30-7) Edmonton at (30-27-8) Buffalo.

LINDSAY:

Four-time Stanley Cup champion Ted Lindsay has passed away.

The Hockey Hall of Famer was 93.

 

CURLING:

The Jim Cotter B.C. team won its first two games at the Tim Hortons Brier in Brandon.

B.C. beat Nova Scotia 8-7 in an extra end (Saturday) followed by a 10-4 victory over Nunavut (Sunday).

Cotter is up against (2-0) Canada this morning (7:00 PT) and will play (1-1) New Brunswick tonight (5:00) in Pool B.

CANADA WINTER GAMES:

Team BC finished fourth in medals (87) and third in gold (30) at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer. The medal standings are right here.

Kimiko Kamstra (Female) and Lochlan Young (Male) of Prince George earned a pair of medals each in judo.

Both helped B.C. to a silver in the women’s and men’s judo team events.

Kamstra (Female -44kg class) also took an individual silver while Young (Male -73kg division) captured an individual bronze.

Spencer Gamache of Quesnel won a pair of silver medals in archery.

Gamache placed second in the men’s individual compound and later ended up with silver in the mixed team event (along with Adi Shapira of Vancouver).

 

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL PROVINCIALS:

The Duchess Park Condors finished 9th at the provincial girls AA basketball championship in Langley.

After losing their first game in the 16-team tournament, the Condors won their final three, including a 68-38 victory over Lambrick Park of Victoria Saturday in the 9th place game.

Smithers finished with a 1-3 record after losing its last game 69-54 to Little Flower Academy of Vancouver.

College Heights had a 2-2 record at the B.C. junior girls basketball championship in Langley, dropping its final game on Saturday 58-46 to WL Seaton of Vernon..

Duchess Park and Kelly Road went 1-3 while Hazelton lost all four of its games.

NBA:

Detroit Pistons  112  Toronto Raptors  107  (OT)

The (46-18) Raptors are second in the NBA Eastern Conference, 2 1/2 games behind the (48-15) Milwaukee Bucks.

Toronto will host the (38-25) Houston Rockets Tuesday.

NFL:

The Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to sign free-agent quarterback Nick Foles to a multiyear contract next week.

Teams are not allowed to talk deals with free agents until March 11, and no deals can be announced until the start of the new league year on March 13.

The Jaguars are expected to release quarterback Blake Bortles and install the 30-year-old Foles as their starter.

He spent the last two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and was named MVP in Super Bowl LII.
