DOYLE CUP JUNIOR HOCKEY: (Saturday)

Prince George Spruce Kings  4  Brooks Bandits  2

The Spruce Kings won the Doyle Cup Pacific Region championship four games to two to improve their overall post-season record to 20-3.

Prince George erased a 2-1 deficit by scoring three goals in the final 11 minutes of the third period before a standing room only crowd of 2,112.

The Spruce Kings completed their home schedule by winning their 20th straight game at the RMCA.

Chong Min Lee tallied the winner with 4:43 remaining.

Patrick Cozzi iced the game with an empty netter with 20 seconds left.

Cozzi, with a goal and an assist in game six, racked up five points in the final three games of the series, all won by Prince George.

Ben Brar tied the game at 2 at 9:55 of the 3rd.

Lucas Vanroboys had the other P.G. goal in the first period.

Logan Neaton made 22 saves as Prince George outshot Brooks 25-24.

The Spruce Kings and Bandits will both compete in the national junior A hockey championship May 11-19 in Brooks.

The Spruce Kings play Sunday, May 12 at 1:00 p.m. PT, Monday, May 13 at 6:00 p.m. PT, Wednesday, May 15 at 6:00 p.m. PT and Thursday, May 16 at 6:00 p.m. PT vs. Brooks in the round robin.

The semi-finals are Saturday, May 18th at 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. PT and the Gold Medal game is on Sunday, May 19th at 2:00 p.m. PT.

The Prince George Cougars selected 10 players comprised of six forwards, three defencemen and one goalie in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft in Red Deer.

Six are from Alberta, three from B.C., and one from Saskatchewan.

Defenceman Keaton Dowhaniuk and forward Koehn Ziemmer from the Okanagan Hockey Academy (OHA) Edmonton Bantam Prep team of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL) Program were taken by the Cougars with the third and fourth overall picks.

The PG Cougars acquired 16-year-old forward Fischer O’Brien from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in return for 17-year-old defenceman Tyson Phare.

O’Brien played the 2018-19 season with the B.C. Major Midget League champion Cariboo Cougars.

He was selected in the 5th round of last year’s WHL Bantam Draft and is the younger brother of former Prince George Cougar & Spruce King Brogan O’Brien.

Phare was the Cougars first-round pick (18th Overall) in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft.

PG SENIOR LACROSSE:

Prince George Senior Lacrosse continues Monday night at 8:00 at Kin 2, with the (1-0) Westwood Pub Devils against (0-0) Northland Nissan Assault.

In the first two games of the season, the Devils whipped Quesnel Crossfire 16-1 (Wednesday) and the Mackenzie Lumberjacks beat the RPR Mechanical/Jr Construction Bandits 9-5 (Thursday).

Cougars fall to T-Birds in tight affair

It was a tight, physical game right until the end, but the Prince George Cougars dropped a 4-3 decision to the Seattle Thunderbirds."We got chasing the game a little bit but we got back in it, it was a hard fought game by both teams," said Cougars Head Coach and GM Mark Lamb on the post-game show on 94.3 the Goat.
