NHL: (6 games Wednesday)

Minnesota Wild  4  Vancouver Canucks  3  (SO)

J.T. Miller scored a couple of third-period goals for the Canucks who lost the shootout 3-2.

Tyler Toffoli notched one assist in his Vancouver debut.

The (32-22-6) Canucks are 2-2-1 on a six-game homestand that concludes Saturday against Boston.

Vancouver is tied with Vegas for second in the Pacific Division, one point behind Edmonton and two points ahead of Calgary and Arizona.

There are 8 NHL games tonight with four Canadian teams in action: Winnipeg is at Ottawa, Montreal visits Washington and Toronto hosts Pittsburgh.

The Tampa Bay Lightning put an 11-game winning streak on the line when they play at Vegas.

The Vegas Golden Knights have acquired defenceman Alec Martinez from the L.A. Kings for a pair of second-round draft picks.

The 32-year-old Martinez has spent his entire NHL career with the Kings, who drafted him in 2007.

WHL: (PG Cougars)

The (16-30-3-4) Prince George Cougars visit the (37-12-3-1) Everett Silvertips on Friday and the (22-27-3-3) Seattle Thunderbirds on Sunday.

The Cougars, riding a 4-game losing streak, are 11 points behind Seattle for the last Western Conference playoff spot.

Prince George has 15 games left (including six at home) and Seattle has 13 remaining.

The (24-26-2-2) Kelowna Rockets fired head coach Adam Foote and replaced him with assistant coach Kris Mallette.

Adam’s son, Nolan Foote, is one of the key Kelowna players, and currently on the injured list.

BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings)

The Prince George Spruce Kings conclude their regular season with home games against the (45-9-1-1) Coquitlam Express Friday and Saturday.

Coquitlam has the best record in the BCHL.

The (18-31-3-4) Spruce Kings will finish 15th out of 17 in the overall BCHL standings and will play the
(35-16-2-2-1) Smoke Eaters in the first round of the playoffs.

The best of seven series will feature a 2-3-2 format starting in Trail on Feb 28th and 29th and returning to PG on Monday, March 2nd.

The Smoke Eaters are second in the Interior Division.

BCMML: (Cariboo Cougars at Kin 1)

The Cariboo Cougars host the (26-8-0-2) Fraser Valley Thunderbirds Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Kin 1.

The Cougars, who have won six straight, also entertain the eighth-place North Island Silvertips on Feb. 29th and March 1st to conclude their regular season.

The (24-10-1-1) Cougars are in 5th place in the 11-team league, just four points behind second-place Fraser Valley.

Curling:

B.C. (Corryn Brown of Kamloops) beat Nova Scotia 5-4 in a tie-breaker this morning (Thursday) at the National Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Moose Jaw.

B.C. advances to the Championship Pool of 8.

Both teams tied for 4th place in Pool B with a 4-3 record.

Ontario and Wild Card finished 6-1 in Pool B followed by P.E.I. at 5-2.

There was also a tie-breaker in Pool A  this morning as Saskatchewan beat New Brunswick 9-7 after both teams tied for 4th at 4-3.

Manitoba topped Pool A at 6-1 with Northern Ontario 5-2 and Canada 4-3.

The playoffs begin Saturday with the final set for Sunday.

The Canadian winner will advance to the World Women’s Curling Championship in Prince George March 14th-22nd.

Canada West Basketball: (UNBC Timberwolves)

Maria Mongomo, in her final season with the UNBC Timberwolves women’s basketball team, has been named a Canada West first-team All-Star.

Mongomo led the Conference in scoring, averaging just over 20 points a game.

Mongomo’s teammate, Madison Landry, was voted to the third All-Star team. Landry averaged 19 points a game.

The UNBC Timberwolves visit the Calgary Dinos in the Canada West women’s basketball quarterfinals tonight (5:00 PT).

The Dinos finished first in the regular season with an 18-2 record, including two wins over UNBC (71-46 and 67-58) on January 3rd and 4th.

The (12-9) Timberwolves are riding a nine-game winning streak.

Meanwhile, Fareed Shittu of the UNBC men’s basketball team was named to the Canada West All-Rookie team.

The Toronto Raptors end their All-Star break when they host the (22-33) Phoenix Suns on Friday.

The (40-15) Raptors are second in the NBA Eastern Conference.
