Longest serving Commissioner in WHL history stepping down at end of 2023-24

A collection of news has come out of the WHL’s Annual General Meeting, headlined by the impending departure of Commissioner Ron Robinson after 24 years.

Robison started in the role at the turn of the century for the 2000-01 season following almost 20 years as a Hockey Canada Executive.

He is the longest-serving commissioner the WHL has ever had.

A timeline for information on the upcoming season’s schedule was also released:

  • 2023 WHL Pre-Season Schedule Release – Monday, June 26
  • 2023-24 WHL Home Openers Announcements – Monday, June 26
  • 2023-24 WHL Regular Season Schedule Release – Tuesday, June 27

This will be the Wenatchee Wild’s first year in the WHL after the BCHL franchise acquired ownership of the Winnipeg Ice.

They will play in the US Division in the Western Conference, Swift Current will slide into the East Division in 2024-25 but will remain in the Central Division this year.

The league announced league-wide average attendance climbed 22% this season, from 3,205 in 21-22 to 3,895 in 22-23.

The Cougars’ regular season attendance average was 2,755 this year, but that number jumped to 4,609 in the postseason.

League average playoff attendance was 4,689.
