United Way, CIBC gather to build planters for new UNBC garden

CIBC, United Way, and the Recycling & Environmental Action Planning Society (REAPS) all gathered together outside of the Exploration Place today (Friday) to build garden beds for a new project at UNBC.

It is all a part of United Way’s “Day of Caring” program, where they partner a local business up with a non-profit group to volunteer their time and help in the community.

Today’s task saw CIBC help build 20 garden beds created out of recycled floorboards for REAPS, which will be carted up to the new David Douglas Botanical Garden at UNBC.

“Everyone feels excited to be doing this project,” Lorna Bihori, a United Way Resource Development Officer, told My PG Now this morning.

“The boxes will be filled with dirt and planted [at UNBC]… it is exciting.”

“It’s always a great feeling for the team and I to get opportunities to give back in our local community. We have had the opportunity to work with the United Way for many years and the partnership has been very strong. We hope to continue this relationship and work to support many more projects like this one in the future”, said CIBC’s Clint Moase.

Bihori said this program is a great example of businesses being able to do more than raise money for a cause.

“There are so many ways to give back to your community, and volunteering and supporting projects like this is just one fine example,” she said. “Everyone in the community will be able enjoy this – and who doesn’t love a day out of the office?”

If any other businesses are interested in spending a day volunteering for a non-profit, Bihori said United Way is always ready to help connect them.
