Hockey:

33 WHL players, including Prince George born and raised Nico Myatovic of the Seattle Thunderbirds, Riley Heidt and Koehn Ziemmer of the Prince George Cougars and McBride’s Tanner Molendyk of the Saskatoon Blades were selected in the first three rounds of the 2023 NHL Draft.

On Thursday, Myatovic was the first player taken in the second round, 33rd overall to the Anaheim Ducks; Heidt was the last player selected in the second round, 64th overall to the Minnesota Wild and Ziemmer went in round three, 78th overall to the LA Kings.

On Wednesday, Molendyk was selected in the first round going 24th overall to the Nashville Predators.

Major League Baseball:

Jared Young of Prince George belted an RBI triple in the second inning for the Chicago Cubs in their Thursday 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

The 27-year-old Young played first base and finished the game 1-for-4 at the plate.

Since being called up from the Triple-A Iowa Cubs, he is 2-for-6 for a .333 average and two RBIs.

Chicago (37-42) is home today (Friday 11:20 AM PT) to begin a weekend series against the Cleveland Guardians (39-41).

The (45-37) Jays are 4-2 on a 9-game homestand which continues tonight (Friday 4:07 PT) against the (40-42) Boston Red Sox.

The Red Sox have lost five straight.

Fastball:

26 teams from all over Western Canada compete in the John Cho Cup fastball tournament this weekend at the Spruce City Stadium and Carrie Jane Grey Park in PG.

Games start today (Friday) at 4:00 p.m. and conclude with the final Sunday afternoon around 3:30.

The tournament consists of 13 teams in the men’s division, seven in U23 and six in the women’s.

 

Track:

Sprinter Adam Sieban of the Prince George Track and Field Club has been named to the Canadian NACAC (North American Central American and Caribbean) U18 championship team.

Sieben will be competing in the 100m and 200m sprint events in Costa Rica, from July 21-23.

 

CFL:

The 4th week of the CFL begins tonight (Friday 4:30 PT) with a pair of winless teams going head to head: (0-3) Edmonton at (0-2) Ottawa (4:30 PT).

The Saturday, July 1st game has (2-1) Winnipeg at (2-0) Montreal (4:00 PT).

The (3-0) B.C. Lions visit the (2-0) Toronto Argonauts on Monday (4:00 PM PT).
