WHL:

The (40-15-0-3) Prince Cougars start their March schedule with a pair of home games against the (24-28-4-1) Spokane Chiefs.

The two teams play tonight (Friday) and Saturday.

The Cougars, who are riding a 9-game point streak, lead the Western Conference by two points over the (39-15-2-1) Portland Winterhawks.

Prince George has 10 games remaining and Portland has 11 left.

Spokane is in the Western Conference’s 8th and final playoff spot.

BCHL:

The Prince George Spruce Kings are on the road this weekend.

They visit the (26-17-1) Vernon Vipers tonight and the (18-22-3-1) Merritt Centennials on Saturday.

With 10 games left in the regular season, the (14-27-3) Spruce Kings are last in the 8-team Interior Division, nine points behind the Centennials and the (19-25-2) Cranbrook Bucks.

It was the 6th loss in the last seven games for the (38-17-7) Canucks, who begin a 3-game road trip Sunday night at 5:00 in Anaheim.

High School Basketball:

The 2024 BC School Sports Girls Basketball Championships conclude Saturday at the
Langley Events Centre.

A total of 64 teams are competing in the 4-day event.

In 1 A, #8 Cedars Christian won its opener but lost in the quarterfinals.

In AA, #14 Nechako Valley is 0-2.

In AAA, #8 College Heights & #6 Duchess Park are both 1-1.

Ringette:

The Ringette Zone Provincials will be held in Prince George at the Kin Centres and Elks Centre.

The competition runs today (Friday (9 to 9), Saturday (8 to 8) and Sunday (championship games).

Divisions include U14, U16, U19 and Open A.

About 270 zone players will take part, with 60 players in the 18+ open category.

Curling:

The 2024 Montana’s Brier starts today (Friday) in Regina.

The 18-team field is headed by two-time defending champion Brad Gushue and his team from St. John’s, Newfoundland.

There are two pools of nine.

Teams will play a complete eight-game round-robin within their pools.

From there, the top three teams in each pool advance to the playoffs.

The final will be played on Sunday, March 10th with the winner to represent Canada at the 2024 World Men’s Curling Championship on March 30-April 7 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland.

Special Olympics:

Five P.G. athletes, Lance Pattinson (bowling), Sam Russell (curling), Spencer Rourke (curling), David Dunn (snowshoeing), and Marinka Van Hage (snowshoeing) are competing this week at the 2024 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary.
