Darren Fitzpatrick Bravery Park key topic at budget meeting

Darren Fitzpatrick Bravery Park will be seeing more than just a skate park in the future.

While a concept design has been made and the construction of a skate park has been confirmed, Hart residents wanted to make sure other improvements will go forward.

“Ground will break in 2016,” Mayor Lyn Hall said of the Skate Park. “With the Bravery park, they’ll consult with the community to see what needs to be done there.”

Colleen and Jim, the parents of the late Corporal Darren Fitzpatrick, made an emotional presentation to council to ensure new improvements move forward.

“To my family, it’s an area of reflection,” says Jim. “A place where people can go and remember those who have served for our country, to honour them. Those who made the ultimate sacrifice, so we can enjoy those freedoms we hold so dear.”

Colleen Fitzpatrick noted it is one of only two parks in Canada to be honoured with the name ‘Bravery Park.’

Director of Development Ian Wells says improvements to the rest of the park will be forwarded to the 2017 funded capital plan.

Council will also move forward with decomissioning of Heather Road park.

The City started pursuing the skate park aggressively after last June’s Talktober meeting in the Hart.
