The first day of the 15th Annual Community Christmas is in the books at My Prince George Now, Country 97fm, and 94.3 the Goat.
Each year, the fundraiser benefits the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Prince George with donations of non-perishable food, toys, cash, and more.
“It’s not just for Christmas, it sees us through, January and February are very lean months for people on fixed income,” said St. Vincent de Paul volunteer Bernie Goold.
“Housing heating costs go up, so it’s nice to have food so that we can provide them with a food hamper in January and February.”
Goold added seeing a child come with a donation is something that always stands out for her.
“The generosity touches you deeply, especially when small children come with a gift so that some other child may have that gift,” Goold said.
“It’s a very humbling and beautiful experience to see what can go on in our community.”
Goold said there were a few children that came with a gift today. (Wednesday)
“They were so pleased to give it, and I know how it’s hard sometimes for children to give up something that they would like themselves,” she said.
Goold added one thing she saw on the first day was a decline in food donations.
“Every little that we get is less that we have to buy to give out,” she explained.
“If it’s possible, it would be nice to see a little bit more food donations.”
She added cash is good as well.
“We have good buying power with the cash that we have,” she explained.
“Even in January and February, we still search all the sales and things that we can buy at a very good price.”
Community Christmas continues at My Prince George Now, 94.3 the Goat and Country 97fm office tomorrow (Thursday) on the corner of Ferry Avenue and Ospika Boulevard from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
