World Baseball Challenge struggles financially despite strong product

The World Baseball Challenge in Prince George may have been a success on the field, but it was a major disappointment financially and at the gate.

Chair, Rick Pattie says despite the deficit, they plan on making another run at it in 2018. “We’re looking at coming back in two years time and we’re going to restructure and remodel some things but nothing I can elaborate at this time. We are looking to come back bigger and stronger.”

It’s very likely the WBC heads back to their international roots in 2018. “That indeed is what we are looking at, we will be reaching out to the international baseball community within the next few weeks trying to see if we can generate some interest and commitments.”

Other possibilities include bumping up the tournament earlier in the summer so it does not conflict with other major events in Prince George.
