In arguably the most dramatic finish of the season the Prince George Cougars persevered to a
6-4 triumph over the Seattle Thunderbirds to earn a split of the doubleheader.
Brendan Guhle snapped a 4-4 tie with 12 seconds left in the third period for the game-winner and his second goal of the game to the delight of a capacity crowd of 5,775 at CN Centre.
Josh Curtis also scored twice, including the Teddy Bear goal at 6:02 of the second period.
The 18-year-old Curtis not only had the first goal but the last one as well into an empty net with four seconds remaining.
He also set up Josh Maser of Houston, B.C. for his first WHL goal that gave Prince George a 2-0 lead.
Brad Morrison also tallied for the Cats.
The teams combined for six second period goals in a 9:16 span, the last five of which came in just three minutes and 51 seconds.
The Thunderbirds, down 4-2 after two, rallied to tie the game including the equalizer from Kegan Kolesar with the goalie Ryan Toth pulled for an extra attacker and just 1:24 remaining.
Nick MCBride made 37 saves as Seattle outshot Prince George 41-30.
The Thunderbirds took Friday’s game 3-2.
The 22-8-2 Cougars are 3-2 on a seven game home-stand that continues Tuesday and Wednesday against the Tri-City Americans.
Prince George leads the BC Division by seven points over Kelowna.
The Cougars are just a point behind Everett for first in the Western Conference and two back of Regina for first in the overall WHL standings.
