PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars doubled the Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-2 Saturday to earn a split of their doubleheader.

The Hurricanes took Friday’s game 6-2 before 5,138 fans, on a night the Mega 50/50 Jackpot reached $94,647.

The 18-23-4-3 Cougars are two points behind Kamloops in the BC Division and eight points behind the Spokane Chiefs, who hold down the final Western Conference wild-card spot.

The Cougars begin a six-game Prairie road trip Friday in Prince Albert.

Max Kryski snapped a 2-2 tie midway through the third period and Josh Curtis added the insurance goal just 16 seconds later as the Cougars ended a three-game losing streak before 2,704 fans at the CN Centre.

Jordy Bellerive notched a hat trick and Brad Morrison added a goal, an assist and a fight for the Hurricanes who scored four times in the second period.

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings scored in the last minute of the second period and added three more goals in the third to erase a 2-0 deficit and beat the Powell River Kings 4-2.

Ethan de Jong scored twice and added an assist before 623 fans at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena (RMCA).

Prince George is tied with Surrey for first in the Mainland Division, two points ahead of Langley.

The 23-14-4-4 Spruce Kings play their next game Friday in Langley.

Patrik Laine scored the only goal in the first period and Connor Hellebuyck made 29 saves for the shutout.

The 18-23-6 Canucks, who lost 5-2 Saturday in Edmonton, host Los Angeles on Tuesday.

 

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

The UNBC Timberwolves are 8-10 and in 10th place in both the men’s and women’s divisions in Canada West basketball; the top 12 make the playoffs.

The UNBC men split a pair on Vancouver Island against the Victoria Vikes while the Lady Timberwolves lost both games against Victoria.

The Timberwolves host Fraser Valley Friday and Saturday to conclude their regular season.

Meryeta O’Dine of Prince George and partner Zoe Bergermann of Erin, Ontario captured the bronze medal Sunday in the World Cup snowboard cross team event in Ezurum, Turkey.

A day earlier, the 20-year-old O’Dine placed sixth out of 32 women in the individual race.

O’Dine is eighth in the world standings.

 

HIGH JUMP:

High Jumper Alyx Treasure of Prince George is one of 46 athletes named to Team Canada’s 2018 Commonwealth Games team.

The four-time national champion is ranked 18th in the world, and third among those that will compete in the women’s high jump at the Commonwealth Games which run April 4th to 15th in Australia.

 

NFL:

AFC Championship Game

Tom Brady threw a pair of touchdown passes to Danny Amendola in the fourth quarter to help the Patriots erase a 20-10 deficit

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski left the game in the second quarter with a concussion and did not return.

The Patriots have opened as five-and-a-half point favourites to win the Super Bowl on February 4th in Minneapolis.

 

NBA:

The Toronto Raptors, coming off Saturday’s 115-109 loss in Minnesota, play their next game Wednesday in Atlanta.

The 31-14 Raptors are second in the NBA Eastern Conference, just two games behind the 34-13 Boston Celtics.
