Third period surge gives Spruce Kings uplifting win against Powell River

The Prince George Spruce Kings survived an early scare from the Powell River Kings pulling out a 4-2 come from behind victory.

Sunday’s matinee from the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena got off to a bumpy start as Carter Turnbull and Alek Sekunda found the back of the net for the visitors jumping out to a 2-0 lead into the second period.

The tide began to change when Ethan de Jong scored with less than minute left in the middle frame on the power play cutting the deficit to 2-1 after 40 minutes.

Powell River netminder Mitch Adamyk finally showed signs of slowing down in the third as the Spruce Kings notched three unanswered goals from Blake Hayward, Sam Anzai, and de Jong who capped off the comeback with a shorthanded marker.

Prince George outshot the Kings by a 37-19 margin and went one-for-six on the man advantage.

Evan DeBrouwer was solid but unspectacular in goal for the Spruce Kings making 17 saves in the victory.

The BCHL’s Mainland Division continues to be ultra-competitive this season with the top four teams separated by just seven points.

Prince George still has a share of first place with the Surrey Eagles.

The Langley Rivermen are in third spot with 52 points just two back of both teams while the Chilliwack Chiefs are stuck in fourth place with 47 points.
