OLYMPICS:

Sarah Beaudry of Prince George finished 29th out of 87 athletes in the women’s Biathlon 15km individual race today at the PyeongChang, South Korea 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

It was the first Olympic competition for the 23-year-old, who was second of four Canadians, behind Rosanna Crawford who ended up 26th.

The Duchess Park grad replaced Megan Tandy of Prince George who has not been feeling well this week with a fever.

The 29-year-old Tandy was 57th out of 87 in Saturday’s Sprint.

Next up in women’s Biathlon will be the 12.5km Mass Start on Saturday.

Prince George’s Meryeta O’Dine competes tonight (Pacific time) in the women’s snowboard cross.

Canada picked up three more medals today (Thursday) to increase its total to 13 (four gold, five silver, four bronze).

Ted-Jan Bloemen won gold in men’s 10,000-metre speed skating (Bloemen took silver in the 5,000-metre event on Sunday).

Canada’s luge relay team captured silver and Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford of Canada took the bronze medal in pairs figure skating.

The Canadian women’s Olympic hockey team beat the United States 2-1 to finish 3-0 in the preliminary round.

Both Canada and the US had already booked berths in the semi-finals on Monday.

The Canadian men’s Olympic hockey team beat Switzerland 5-1 in its opener.

Rachel Homan of Canada is 0-2 in Olympic women’s curling after a pair of losses: 8-6 to South Korea and 7-6 to Sweden in 11 ends.

Kevin Koe of Canada is 3-0 in Olympic men’s curling after a 7-4 victory over Norway.

Jamie Macdonald of Fort. St. James will participate in the women’s short-track speedskating relay on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old crashed in women’s 500 metres preliminary race.

 

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Spruce Kings are a point away from winning their division for the first time in the BCHL.

They lead the Mainland by 12 points over Chilliwack and the Chiefs have just six games left.

The Spruce Kings scored once in each period (last goal into an empty net) to complete a perfect 5-0 home-stand before 714 fans.

Evan DeBrouwer made 29 saves as each team had 30 shots.

The (30-15-4-4) Spruce Kings play their final five regular season games on the road starting this weekend when they visit Surrey Friday and last place Coquitlam Saturday.

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars visit the Kamloops Blazers Saturday to begin a four game road trip.

The (26-27-1-3) Blazers have two straight after winning a pair on the road last weekend in Prince George.

The Cats also play at Kelowna on Tuesday, Spokane on Friday the 23rd and Tri-City Saturday the 24th, before returning home to meet the Rockets on February 27th and 28th.

The (19-30-4-4) Cougars have dropped 11 of their last 13, including four in a row.

They have failed to score the first goal in nine consecutive games.

CARIBOO COUGARS:

The Cariboo Cougars head to Abbotsford to play the (21-9-1-1) Fraser Valley Thunderbirds Saturday night at 6 and Sunday afternoon.

The (25-6-3-0) Major Midget Cougars, who have six road games left before playoffs, are tied for first place with the (25-4-2-1) Valley West Hawks, although the Hawks have two games in hand.

The Thunderbirds are in third place, three points ahead of the Okanagan Rockets and nine off the lead.

 

NHL:

Panthers scored all four of their goals in the first period.

Bo Horvat had a goal and two assists for the (22-29-6) Canucks, who play the (30-19-8) Sharks tonight in San Jose.

The Canucks have signed general manager Jim Benning to a multi-year contract extension.

Vancouver has a 131-139-33 record since Benning took over as general manager in 2014.

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

The UNBC Timberwolves play the 19-1 Alberta Golden Bears in the Canada West men’s basketball quarter-finals in Edmonton.

The best-of-three series opens Friday (2PM Pacific) and continues Saturday (1PM Pacific), with the if necessary game, Sunday (1PM Pacific).

The Timberwolves have won seven of their last nine games, including a playoff victory, after starting the season 4-8.
