STANLEY CUP:

The Stanley Cup was in Prince George Monday.

Brett Connolly of the Washington Capitals held a public celebration with the Cup in his hometown.

Well in excess of 2,000 fans attended at the CN Centre.

Among them was Tate: “I’m a big fan of the Washington Capitals. It’s cool that the Cup is in town. I’m pretty excited and it’s awesome.”

Jason brought along his son: “It’s a pretty cool experience. He just turned five and he’s excited to play hockey and cheer on the (PG) Cougars this season.”

Connolly is the third Prince George Cougar alumni to capture the Stanley Cup.

 

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars open their 2018 Training Camp on Friday.

The six-day Training Camp at the CN Centre will continue until Wednesday, August 29th, with the Cougars annual Black versus White game (free admission).

The Cougars open their pre-season schedule on Friday, August 31st in Kamloops.

 

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings begin their training camp Friday.

The Spruce Kings will play a pair of exhibition games next week against the Merritt Centennials.

The two teams face off Wednesday, August 29th in Prince George and on Friday, August 31st in Merritt.

The Spruce Kings open their BCHL regular season at home on Friday, September 7th against the reigning RBC Cup-champion Chilliwack Chiefs.

 

WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE:

The Portland Winterhawks have confirmed they have hired Don Hay as an assistant coach.

Hays is the WHL’s winningest regular-season and playoff coach.

He spent the last four years as head coach of the Kamloops Blazers.

 

NHL:

In a trade of minor league forwards, the Montreal Canadiens acquired Hunter Shinkaruk from the Calgary Flames in return for Kerby Rychel.

Shinkaruk was a first-round draft pick of the Vancouver Canucks in 2013.

 

LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES: (in Williamsport, Pennsylvania)

Canada  6  Mexico  4

The Canadian champions from Surrey are 2-1 and will play Puerto Rico this afternoon.

 

MLB:

Seattle Mariners  7  Houston Astros  4

The (72-54) Mariners are 3 1/2 games behind Houston and Oakland, who are the co-leaders in the AL West and they also share the final wild-card spot.

The A’s have a Major-League best record of 49-14 since June 16.

Start of a six-game homestand for the (56-69) Blue Jays.

 

WESTERN CANADIAN BASEBALL:

One week after capturing the provincial title, the Prince George Surg Med Knights returned home Western Canadian U-18 “AA” baseball champions.

The Knights skunked the Portage Pirates of Manitoba 10-0 in the final of the five-team tournament in La Broquerie, Manitoba.

Game MVP Richard French tossed a complete game shutout.

Prince George went 3-1 in the round robin.

The Prince George Grays finished with a win and three losses at the Western Canadian Senior AA baseball championship in Moose Jaw.

 

B.C. JUVENILE GOLF:

Natasha Kozlowski of Prince George is one of just 15 female golfers (and the only one from the north) in the field at the BC Juvenile Championships in Kelowna.

The 54-hole tournament begins today.

The 16-year-old Kozlowski is coming off a victory this month at the Ladies Simon Fraser Open in Prince George.

Last month she placed 31st at the B.C. women’s amateur championship in Golden and 24th in the junior girl’s provincial championship in Kimberley.

 

SIMON FRASER GOLF:

Trevor Metcalf of Vanderhoof is the Men’s Simon Fraser Open champion for the fourth time in the last five years.

The 30-year-old Metcalf finished the 36-hole tournament at the PG Golf and Curling Club at five-under 137 (69-68), two strokes better than runner-up and first-round leader Brian Magrath (68-71).

Defending champion Trevor Robertson ended up third at two-under (69-71).

A total of 95 golfers competed.

 

SOCCER:

The UNBC Timberwolves will begin their Canada West men’s soccer season this weekend.

The Timberwolves will host the Victoria Vikes Friday and Saturday night at 6.

In the conference’s annual pre-season coaches poll that was released Monday, UNBC is eighth and Victoria ninth out of 13 teams.

The Seattle Seahawks have released punter Jon Ryan of Regina.

The 36-year-old Ryan was with the Seahawks for 10 years after a stint with the Green Bay Packers and before that the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Running back Adrian Peterson is back in the NFL after agreeing to a one-year contract with the Washington Redskins.

The 33-year-old Peterson, who made seven Pro Bowls in 10 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, was released last year by the Arizona Cardinals.

Peterson ranks 12th on the NFL’s all-time rushing list.
