Crews working for the City of Prince George are repaving and painting traffic markings at the site of the Winnipeg Street sinkhole formed earlier this year. The City expects Winnipeg to completely reopen by next week.
Pedestrian traffic, however, could be delayed a few days on the east side of Winnipeg as crews will be pouring new concrete for the sidewalks. Residents are encouraged to follow construction signs in the area as some operations like cleanup will continue in the days ahead.
Crews installed a nine-metre by 4.8-metre concrete chamber to replace a failed section of pipe, which has caused several sinkholes over the last few years at that spot. That came following the installation of dams and three high-capacity pumps to drain groundwater from around the pipe. Crews found eight metres of pipe had completely deteriorated after a rainstorm in the spring. The City believes this was caused by turbulence from the discharge of stormwater from the Carney Street storm sewer entering the pipe where it had failed.
