Hot, dry summer anticipated for Prince George area

The summer season is now in full swing within the Prince George area and if the last two were any indication, residents can expect conditions to be dry once again.

The province is coming off of back-to-back record-breaking wildfire seasons where some people are blaming it on climate change.

However, Meteorologist Doug Lundquist admits while it has been warmer, that’s not completely the case.

“For example, what you can say is that 50 years we might have had 10 days over 30 degrees throughout the summer and now we might have 15, so the fact that we might have a little more likelihood of warmer weather or perhaps drier conditions is a big piece of it, not the whole picture but a little bit of it.”

Lundquist adds its quite likely the stretch between July to September will be above-seasonal.

“You rarely see the probability of having above-average temperatures that high, it’s something like between 80 and 90 percent chance like the next three months will be above average for temperatures so it’s really likely we’ll be above average.”

The hope is that some of the predicted rain actually falls within the interior of the province as we prepare for the Canada Day long weekend.

“I am really hoping that the rains we are forecasting for much of the BC Interior over the next few days really pans out as it’s super critical for us, we need that rain to get us through July with at least some hope we get some rain throughout the summer to try and replenish it.”
