NHL:

The NHL regular season opens with four games tonight, two of them all-Canadian match-ups.

The Vancouver Canucks visit the Edmonton Oilers (7 p.m. PT) and the Ottawa Senators play in Toronto against the Maple Leafs.

The Canucks have decided to name a captain during the team’s home opener Oct. 9th vs. LA.

Leafs coach Mike Babcock says Toronto will have a captain for the opener.

The other two opening-night games have the Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues hosting Washington and San Jose at Vegas.

Sharks forward Evander Kane has been slapped with a three-game suspension for abuse of an official.

Goalie Eric Comrie has been claimed off waivers by the Arizona Coyotes from the Winnipeg Jets, while the Jets claimed defenceman Carl Dahlstrom from the Chicago Blackhawks.
All other players placed on waivers Monday cleared, including defenceman Brandon Manning of Prince George who is expected to be sent down by the Edmonton Oilers to their Bakersfield Condors AHL farm club.


WHL:
(PG Cougars)

The Prince George Cougars have 10 games in October, six of them at CN Centre.

The (0-3-0-1) Cougars host the (2-1-1) Kelowna Rockets Friday and Saturday.

The Rockets entertain the Tri-City Americans tonight before heading to PG.

The Cougars, the only winless team in the WHL, will be without three veterans this weekend.

Cole Moberg and Jackson Leppard are expected out 1-2 weeks while Ilijah Colina is still 2-3 weeks from returning.

After four games, the Cougars are 2/19 on the power-play (10.5 %) and 9/13 on the penalty kill (69.2 %).

They have scored seven goals while allowing 14.

BCHL:
(PG Spruce Kings)

The (3-4-2) Prince George Spruce Kings play their next two games at the BCHL Showcase in Penticton against the (1-8-2) West Kelowna Warriors on Friday (10 a.m.) and against the (3-5-1) Trail Smoke Eaters on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).

The Spruce Kings are six points behind the (7-1) Mainland Division leading Coquitlam Express.

BC Major Midget League:
(Cariboo Cougars)

The (1-0-0-1) Cariboo Cougars visit the (1-1) Kootenay Ice in the BCMML Saturday (4:00 PM) and Sunday (9:45 AM) in Trail.

MLB:

(National League wild-card game)

Washington Nationals  4  Milwaukee Brewers  3

The Nationals scored three runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to erase a 3-1 deficit.

Washington will carry a nine-game winning streak into its best-of-five NL Division Series against the Dodgers
starting Thursday (5:37 p.m.) in Los Angeles.

The other NLDS will also open on Thursday (2:00 PT) featuring the St. Louis Cardinals at the Atlanta Braves.

The Al wild-card game tonight (5:00 PT)  has the Tampa Bay Rays at the Oakland A’s.

The winner plays at Houston on Friday (11:05 a.m.) against the Astros.

The New York Yankees host Minnesota in a best-of-five ALDS series beginning Friday (4:07 p.m).

Canada West Women’s Soccer: 

The (3-2-3) UNBC Timberwolves women’s soccer team is fourth out of eight teams in the Pacific Division with six games to go.

The top six advance to the playoffs.

The UNBC women will host the (7-0-1) Trinity Western Spartans Friday night at 6:00 and the (2-2-4) Fraser Valley Cascades Sunday at noon at Masich Place.

Canada West Men’s Soccer:

The UNBC Timberwolves men’s soccer team will visit the (6-4) Trinity Western Spartans Friday and Saturday night at 7:15 in Langley.

The (4-5-2) Timberwolves have just four games left and are last out of seven teams in the Pacific Division, with just the top four to advance to the playoffs.

NFL:

The 5th week of the NFL season starts Thursday (5:20 p.m.) with the LA Rams at Seattle.

Both teams are 3-1 in the NFC West.

Just three teams are unbeaten: New England and Kansas City are 4-0 while San Francisco is 3-0.

Six teams are still searching for a victory.

Miami, Cincinnati, Denver and Washington are 0-4, the New York Jets are 0-3 while Arizona is  0-3-1.

CFL:

Just five weekends remain in the CFL regular season.

Week 17 begins Friday (4:00 p.m. PT) with (7-7) Edmonton at (11-3) Hamilton.

The (4-10) BC Lions, who have won three straight, host the (2-11) Toronto Argonauts Saturday night at 7:00.
