Cariboo Cougars: 

Captain John Herrington scored the game-winning goal with 31 seconds left in the third period to give the Cariboo Cougars a 3-2 victory over the St. Albert Nektar Raiders Sunday night at the Mac’s AAA Midget Hockey Tournament in Calgary.

The Cougars finished pool play with a 3-1 record in the round-robin.

They will now wait to see how games today (Monday) unfold.

The top team in each of the five Mac’s pools advances to playoffs, while the three clubs with the next-best records will also qualify.

The Cats started the tournament with a 7-2 win Thursday over the Airdrie CFR Bisons, then fell 3-2 to the Moose Jaw Warriors Friday and bounced back with a 5-1 victory over the Calgary Royals on Saturday.

The (17-5-1-1) Cougars are in 3rd place in the 11-team BCMML.

Cariboo will resume league play on the Jan. 11-12 weekend when they’ll be in Kelowna for a showdown with the first place Okanagan Rockets.

WHL: (PG Cougars)

The Prince George Cougars visit the (18-13-1-2) Kelowna Rockets tonight in their final game in 2019.

The Cougars are 1-1 on a three-game post Christmas road trip.

Prince George beat Everett 4-3 Friday but lost 5-1 to Victoria Saturday.

The Cougars will start 2020 with home games against the (25-7-2) Everett Silvertips Friday and Saturday.

The (9-21-1-3) Cougars are 7 points behind the (12-16-4-1) Tri-City Americans and the
(13-18-2-1) Seattle Thunderbirds, who share the final Western Conference wild-card spot.

Victoria Royals  5  Prince George Cougars  1  (Saturday)

The Cougars three-game win streak came to an end as they suffered their 10th straight loss in games played in Victoria (0-7-1-2).

Prince George Cougars  4  Everett Silvertips  3  (Friday)

Ilijah Colina (6) snapped a 3-3 tie at 2:34 of the third period.

NHL: (10 Sunday games)

Vancouver Canucks  5  Calgary Flames 2

Tyler Myers scored twice and added an assist.

Season-high 5th straight victory for the Canucks who also won 3-2 Saturday over LA.

Vancouver will play its next game Thursday at home against Chicago.

The (21-15-4) Canucks are tied with Arizona for 2nd in the tight Pacific Division, just two points behind Vegas and one point ahead of Calgary.

World Jr. Hockey Championship: (in the Czech Republic)

Canada plays Germany this morning at 6:00 (PT) in its third round-robin game at the World Jr. Hockey Championship in the Czech Republic.

Both teams are 1-1.

Canada won its opener 6-4 over the USA but lost its second game 6-0 against Russia.

Canadian star Alexis Lafreniere won’t play today due to a knee injury.

Mitch Love of Quesnel, the head coach of the Saskatoon Blades, is one of the assistant coaches for Team Canada under head coach Dale Hunter.

BCHL:
(PG Spruce Kings)
The Prince George Spruce Kings play their next game Friday against the Rivermen in Langley.

The Spruce Kings will host the Surrey Eagles on Jan. 10th and 11th.

With 19 games left, the (13-21-2-3) Spruce Kings are last in the Mainland Division, three points behind (14-17-2-4) Surrey and six back of (17-17-1-1-1) Langley.

NFL: (Final games of the regular season)

San Francisco  26  Seattle  21

The 49’ers win the NFC West with a 13-3 record. They will get a first-round bye as the top seed while Seattle will play at Philadelphia in a playoff game Sunday afternoon at 1:40 PT.

Philadelphia  34  NY Giants  17

The Eagles win gave them the NFC East title.

Tennessee  35  Houston  14

The Titans win game them the 6th and final playoff spot in the AFC.

Miami  27  New England  24

In arguable the biggest upset of the season, the loss cost the Patriots a first-round bye in the playoffs.

New England will host Tennessee Saturday night at 5:15 (PT) with the winner to play at Kansas City.

Other playoff match-ups have Buffalo at Houston Saturday at 1:35 p.m. (PT) and Minnesota at New Orleans Sunday morning at 10:05 (PT).

NBA:

Oklahoma City Thunder  98  Toronto Raptors  97

The (22-11) Raptors are 16-0 against teams below. 500 and 6-11 against teams above .500.

Toronto is tied for 4th in the Eastern Conference.

The Raptors host the (10-22) Cleveland Cavaliers Tuesday (4 p.m PT) to close out 2019.
