CNC implements virtual studio for fine arts students

Betty Kovacic, a Fine Arts Instructor at CNC has found a way to preserve the visual part of art for her students by creating a virtual art studio using the video conferencing software Zoom.

“Instead of discussing the art piece with just the student artist, the entire class was able to see, listen and be involved in that particular learning experience,” explained Kovacic.

She didn’t originally intend to use video conferencing, initially asking students to submit their work via email.

“It was okay, but it felt impersonal.”

The email method also meant that students weren’t reaping the benefits of peer participation.

Fine Arts student Mary Reid agreed that the most valuable part of the course for her was being with Kovacic and her fellow classmates as they created and discussed their work.

“Even though you’re seeing everyone through a screen in their own spaces, you still feel like you’re getting the benefit of being together,” Reid said.
