Hockey:

The Prince George Cougars have hired Jim Playfair as the team’s new Associate Coach.

He takes over for Josh Dixon who has accepted a position with the University of Guelph.

Playfair, from Fort St. James, spent 15 years coaching in the NHL as both an Associate Coach and Head Coach.

He was part of the Cougars coaching staff in a part-time role in 2022-2023.

Former Prince George Cougars forward Blake Eastman will play his final season of junior hockey in PEI.

The 20-year-old Eastman has joined the Summerside Western Capitals of the junior A Maritime Hockey League after spending the last four seasons with the Cougars.

In 180 regular-season games with P.G., he tallied 44 points, including 19 goals.

 

Golf:

American Brian Harman has his first Major by winning The Open at Royal Liverpool.

Harman finished at 13-under-271, good for a six-stroke victory over four golfers, including Jon Rahm and Jason Day.

Canadian Corey Conners tied for 52nd at 4-over 288 after closing with a 76.

Toronto is 3rd in the A.L East and they are holding down the 3rd and final wild-card spot in the American League.

The Jays visit the (57-41) LA Dodgers tonight (Monday 7:10 PT).

First baseman Jared Young of P.G. did not play in the Chicago Cubs’ 4-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals that concluded Sunday.

The 28-year-old Young is batting .171 (6-for-35) in 13 games in a Chicago uniform with one homer and five RBIs.

The (48-51) Cubs visit the (41-60) Chicago White Sox Tuesday night (5:10 PT).

FIFA Women’s World Cup

Canada, coming off a 0-0 tie against Nigeria, plays its second game Wednesday (5 AM PT) against the Republic of Ireland in Perth, Australia.

Ireland lost its opener 1-0 to Australia.

The Prince George Kodiaks junior football team opens its 10-game BCFC regular season schedule on Saturday, July 29th when they host the defending Canadian Bowl champions, the Okanagan Sun.
