BC Wildfire Service positioning more resources in the North in preparation of higher temperatures

An upper ridge has been transitioning across the Prince George Fire Centre, bringing above-seasonal temperatures and a lack of precipitation to the area.

“Many of our larger fires have woken up again and are displaying that aggressive fire activity and behaviour,” said Fire Information Officer Davin Richmond.

Despite the higher temperatures, Richmond says the BC Wildfire Service has been having strong initial attacks on new start fires, calling 17 of them out.

According to Forests Minister Bruce Ralston, the BC Wildfire Service is actively positioning more resources in Northern BC to prepare for heightened wildfire activity.

“We are grateful for the return of the land task force from the Canadian Armed Forces, who will be among those resources supporting the wildfire effort in the Northern half of the province,” Ralston said.

Additionally, 200 South African fire fighters arrived in BC this weekend.

“We are still in very challenging and dynamic times,” added Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness Bowinn Ma.

“Now is not the time to let our guard down. Yesterday (Sunday) the warming and drying trend continued with above seasonal temperatures in the South and the North.”

There are 388 active wildfires in the Province.
