BC sees growth in latest population numbers

More people are calling BC home according to the latest population numbers from Stats Canada.

Demographer, Patrick Charbonneau says a good chunk of the increase came from international migration.

“In BC the population rose by 44,700, 22,600 of that came from international migration while another 12 thousand came from inter-provincial migration.”

Charbonneau adds much like the rest of Canada, the population of BC is getting older.

“The portion of seniors was at 17.5 percent and this was slightly higher of children aged 0-14 which was 14.6 percent.”

For the first time ever in Canada, there are more seniors than children.

Seniors over 65 made up 16.1 per cent of the population, with kids making up 16 per cent.

As of July 1st, 31 million Canadians were living in four provinces.

They were BC, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec.
