UNBC group seeking support for Backyard BBQ

UNBC’s Northern Undergraduate Student Society is seeking financial support for this year’s Backyard Barbecue.

The annual event and concert will cost about $46,000. After anticipated drink and ticket sales, NUGSS expects to be about $8,000 in the hole.

NUGSS approached city Council for $3,000 but will only receive half of that. Regardless President Arctica Cunningham is happy to have Council’s support, and will keep seeking support elsewhere.

“We’re just looking for other businesses that are interested in partnering with us, getting some exposure for all these new students that are coming into the city. It’s a great advertising opportunity for any businesses so we’re just going to keep putting our requests out there asking businesses and see who else is interested in joining us.”

Many councillors, including Albert Koehler, would like NUGSS to revisit its event budget. If nothing can be trimmed, Koehler says Council could commit anymore.

“It will be a good event and there will be support there. If they will not be able to balance it, I’d have no problem seeing them again before Council and asking for another $1500.”

NUGSS will have to move quickly if they want to find new business partners in time for the event, especially if they need to present to Council again. The 21st annual Backyard Barbecue is on Friday, September 18th. There’s no word yet on who the headlining act will be.
