Foggy Monday kicks off loaded weather forecast for Prince George

The morning commute in Prince George looks a lot like pea soup thanks to a thick patch of fog.

It was above-seasonal over the weekend with daily highs of plus five recorded on Friday and Saturday but failed to smash any records.

According to Environment Canada Meteorologist Trevor Smith, the fog will be sticking around for a while.

“It’s pretty thick out there right now we’re seeing visibility at a quarter mile at the Prince George airport so drive cautiously if you’re out on the roads this morning and it’s probably going to be with us right through the noon hour and I think as we get into towards the early part of the afternoon it should be able to break up gradually.”

Balmy weather from the weekend is most likely the culprit for the misty skies as the cooler overnight lows below the freezing mark forced a bit of a clash.

“So we’ve got relatively warm air aloft at kind of mountain top level with the clear skies and then we get cooler air developing through the bottom and then this temperature inversion is set in and we’re probably going to see the fog in the area for at least the next couple of days and maybe through Wednesday.”

The balmy conditions melted a good chunk of the snow that’s been piled up over the Northern Capital.

Smith adds we only have a couple more days of this before it gets cold again.

“By about Wednesday, we will see highs of only minus five and then overnight lows dropping to minus fifteen and then when we head to Friday, we could see a low to minus and a high of only minus twelve so actually getting back below normal for the end of the week.”

The warmer weather is expected to last until Wednesday evening when the overnight is predicted to reach -15, ushering in double-digit minus temperatures the rest of the week.
