WHL: (PG Cougars)

The Prince George Cougars host the BC Division-leading Kamloops Blazers tonight and Saturday to begin a six-game homestand.

The (12-24-3-4) Cougars are 2-1 this season against the (30-11-2-1) Blazers.

Prince George is eight points behind the (18-22-2-1) Seattle Thunderbirds for the final Western Conference wild-card spot with both teams having 25 games left, including four against each other.

The Cats are also two points back of the (14-23-4-1) Tri-City Americans.

The Cougars host Tri-City Jan. 31st and Feb. 1st and Seattle on Feb. 4th and 5th.

BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings)

The Prince George Spruce Kings visit the Surrey Eagles tonight and the Chilliwack Chiefs Saturday.

The Spruce Kings began a string of six straight road games with a 4-3 victory (Wednesday) over the Coquitlam Express.

Prince George will also play Jan. 29th in Trail, Jan. 31st in Vernon and Feb. 1st in West Kelowna before hosting Wenatchee on Feb. 5th.

With 13 regular-season games left, the (16-24-2-3) Spruce Kings are last in the Mainland Division, 4 points behind the (19-22-1-1-1) Langley Rivermen and 6 points back of the (18-20-3-4) Surrey Eagles.

BCMML: (Cariboo Cougars)

The (18-8-1-1) Cariboo Cougars play the (19-7) Vancouver Northeast Chiefs Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in Burnaby.

Both teams are tied for 4th place in the BC Major Midget League, although the Chiefs hold two games in hand.

The Cougars have a dozen regular-season games left, with the last eight of them on home ice at Kin 1.

NHL:

The NHL All-Star Game will be featured Saturday in St. Louis.

Regular season play picks up again on Monday with half-a-dozen games, including the (30-11-8) St. Louis Blues at the Vancouver Canucks.

The (27-18-4) Canucks have won their last eight home games.

Vancouver leads the tight Pacific Division but is just a point over Edmonton, Calgary, Arizona and Vegas.

Canada West Basketball: (UNBC Timberwolves)

The UNBC Timberwolves host the Brandon Bobcats tonight at 6 and 8 and again Saturday at 5:00 and 7:00 PM. The UNBC women are 5-9 and in 12th place out of 17 teams.

The UNBC men, who have lost their last seven, are 4-10 and also in 12th spot.

The top 12 teams advance to the playoffs.

Brandon is 1-13 (both women and men).

20 UNBC Timberwolves have been recognized as Academic All-Canadians for their work on and off the playing field.

This number equals the most in UNBC history, tying the 2018-2019 total.

The annual U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian ceremony honours students who have achieved at least a 3.67 GPA, or an A-.

NBA:

The Toronto Raptors put a five-game win streak on the line when they play tonight in New York against the (12-33) Knicks.

Toronto will also visit the (20-23) San Antonio Spurs Sunday afternoon.

The (30-14) Raptors are 3rd in the NBA Eastern Conference, a game back of Miami.

Pascal Siakam of the Toronto Raptors has been named a starter in his first-ever all-star game.

The 25-year-old forward leads the Raptors in scoring with a 23.5 points-per-game average, while adding 7.7 rebounds per contest.

The game will be played on Feb. 16 in Chicago.

 

Australian Open: (Tennis)

Canadian Milos Raonic pulled off an upset to advance to the round of 16 at the Australian Open, the season’s first Grand Slam.

The No. 32 seed from Thornhill, Ont., beat the No. 6 seed from Greece Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets (7-5, 6-4, 7-6) in a third-round match today (Friday).

Raonic will next play 39th-ranked Marin Cilic of Croatia.

Serena Williams is out as she lost in the third round 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 to 27th-seeded Wang Qiang of China.

Former No. 1 Naomi Osaka of Japan lost to 15-year-old American Coco Gauff 6-3, 6-4.
