Winter Games—February 27

Team BC will not win a medal in men’s hockey at the Canada Winter Games. Quebec erased an early 2-0 deficit
to double BC 6-3 in the quarter-finals. Justin Almeida of the Cariboo Cougars had one of the goals for BC, who can finish no higher than 5th. Almeida has five points in four games. In the other quarter-finals: Ontario trounced Saskatchewan 9-0, Manitoba beat Nova Scotia 4-1 and Alberta whipped New Brunswick 6-1.

–The men’s hockey semis tonight at CN Centre have Alberta against Manitoba at 4:05 followed by Ontario against Quebec at 7:35. (The bronze game is Saturday at 7:30pm with the gold medal game Sunday at 11:35am)

–The women’s curling quarter-finals today at noon feature BC’s Sarah Daniels of North Delta against New Brunswick and Alberta to face Saskatchewan. New Brunswick advanced after winning a pair of tie-breakers. Both Ontario and Nova Scotia have byes to the semi-finals tonight at 7 after finishing first in their round robin pool. Medal games are Saturday with bronze on the line at 1pm followed by the gold medal match at 5pm. BC finished 5-1 in round robin play after an 8-6 victory over Saskatchewan.

–On the final day of figure skating, 13-year-old McKenna Colthorp, who is from Fort St James, earned a bronze in female novice.

–Kristen Yawney (-70kgs) of Prince George finished with a win and two losses in her judo (-70 kgs) weight class. Judo wraps up Saturday at the Northern Sport Centre with the team competition beginning at noon.

–Team BC racked up 12 medals on Thursday to improve its third place total to 75. Podium finishes took place in figure skating, cross country skiing and in judo with one gold, three silver and eight bronze medals awarded.

–Snowboarding continues today at Tabor Mountain featuring slope style with finals at 1pm. The snow cross will wrap up the event Saturday. Competing from Prince George are Meryeta O’dine, Evan Bichon and Dawson Ellery.

–Squash and Badminton at the Northern Sport Centre, Table Tennis at Duchess Park and Synchronized Swimming at the Aquatic Centre continue today and concludes Saturday.

–Cross Country Skiing has just the relays left Saturday at Otway beginning at 10am.
