Manitoba’s 2-1 win brings end to T-Wolves post-season

The UNBC women’s soccer team has had its season brought to an end following a 2-1 defeat to the Manitoba Bisons.

Played in Calgary, the playoff play-in match had the teams tied at 1-1 following the first 45 minutes of play; however, a goal in the 70th minute would be all the Bisons needed to seal the victory.

Manitoba opened up the scoring in the 36th minute after Hailey Lavarias drove into the box for the first of the match, squeaking a low shot between the outstretched arm of keeper Brooke Molby and the left post.

The Timberwolves found their equalizer by way of Paige Payne prior to the halftime whistle. The goal was assisted by first-year Kaya Oro Martin.

In the second half, Manitoba caught Molby far outside of the box in hopes of challenging the ball. Bisons’ Nicole Martin outwitted the Timberwolves’ keeper, chipping the ball over the head and into the net from 30 yards out.

From there, the Timberwolves were unable to piece together consistent passes as Manitoba protected their lead and managed five minutes of added time.

Manitoba will now face the Calgary Dinos in Sunday’s quarterfinal at 11:00 a.m. PST.

As for the Timberwolves, the loss brings an end to their season after posting a 3-8-4 record.
