Slow Down, Stay Alert: Prince George RCMP target speeders as students return

Students at Ecole College Heights Elementary returned to class yesterday (Tuesday) with a little help from the Prince George RCMP.

Officers and ICBC were out in full force trying to catch those speeding in a school zone.

Cpl. Jennifer Cooper with the North District RCMP told MyPGNow.com the back to school routine can throw people for a loop.

“For those that don’t have kids within the school system, it kind of takes them off guard. They never know when it’s going to be because the year changes with the Labour Day weekend – it’s not the same every year kind of like Christmas is. But, for the people we catch that don’t have any kids are often unaware (of the speed limit).”

She added motorists often revert back to bad habits once school is back in session.

“In the coming weeks, we will start to find that the drivers forget the rules and that it’s Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm.”

Tracey Hoffman, who is the spokesperson for ICBC noted they teamed up with the Mounties for the Thank You for thinking of us campaign where photos of students could be found on signage around the school.

Hoffman noted parents should avoid stop in undesignated areas.

“It may be safe for your kid to get out but you might be putting another child in danger inadvertently by blocking sidewalks and sightlines.”

Fines for speeding in a school zone in British Columbia start at $196 and go up to $483 depending on how much you exceed the 30 km/hr limit.
