Spruce Kings and Denney frighten Chiefs in 7-4 thriller

A hat trick from Michael Denney and a dominant five on five from the Prince George Spruce Kings turned Kopar Memorial Arena into a house of horrors, putting up a haunting 7-4 victory over the Chilliwack Chiefs in front of 1491 fans.

The action got going in the last five minutes of the first period, as P.G.’s Charlie Spencer and Mason Loewen would tally goals at 15:28 and 15:39 respectively, though Chilliwack’s Markuss Sieradzkis would cut the lead in half (16:39), thanks to a power play.

Spruce Kings would pick up two more in the first period from the game’s first star Michael Denney (17:47) and Ryan Wachtel (19:36).

The Chiefs would open the scoring in the second period (11:05) from Cooper Ludwar, but would quickly be extinguished by two more goals from Spruce Kings’ Denney (11:33) and Rhett Tubello (19:37).

A kneeing penalty and a game misconduct from Prince George’s Vincent Croteau would allow Chilliwack to light the lamp twice from Sam Thibault and Sieradzkis (5:02 and 5:33), though the Spruce Kings would get the last laugh with Denny completing the hat trick (13:58).

“Big fight out of Vinny [Croteau], it was a big hit too, we’ll always kill those off.” said Spencer. “I mean, we gave up a few, but it’s alright. We;re a resilient team so, just got back to work and closed it out.”

P.G.’s Ryder Green would 24 of 28 shots faced, with his team putting up 35 shots.

The (11-3) Spruce Kings, now on a six game win streak, play again tomorrow afternoon (Sunday) at 2:00 against the (4-12) Surrey Eagles, before heading into a five-game road trip.
