BC Hydro says around 63,000 customers were without power as of about 7 a.m. today (Sunday) across the province as wind storms continue to hit B.C.
According to BC Hydro, around 135,000 customers were without power at the height of the storm around 1 a.m. this morning, with the hardest hit areas including Prince George, Surrey, Duncan and Port Hardy.
“We were prepared for this storm and had crews and resources ready to respond immediately,” said BC Hydro Spokesperson Whitney Deane. “Our crews are making good progress, but with strong winds continuing this morning, we expect to see additional damage and outages before conditions improve. We appreciate our customers’ patience as our crews work as quickly and safely as possible to restore power.”
Since Friday, more than 380,000 outages have been reported, and crews are continuing restoration work while also responding to new outages as they occur with winds continuing.
According to Environment Canada, another strong low pressure system is bringing southeasterly winds with gusts ranging from 60 to 80 km/h across the Interior. These winds are expected to peak this morning.
Winds are expected to ease slightly before an incoming cold front brings a strong push of southwesterly winds, with gusts possibly reaching 90 km/h starting late this morning in some western regions. These are expected to ease by this evening.
BC Hydro says the storm response will continue around the clock until power has been restored to all customers affected.
In an update shared last night (Saturday), City of Prince George officials said parks staff are aware of trees down in a number of park locations throughout the city, and will address them in the coming days after higher priority tree clean-up has been completed.
