PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

Josh Anderson scored against his former team, his first goal in a Swift Current uniform.

The Cougars dealt the 19-year-old defenceman to the Broncos just prior to the trade deadline this month for a pair of first-round picks in the WHL Bantam Draft.

Anderson’s goal was one of two power play markers for the 36-12-3-1 Broncos, who have the second best record in the WHL.

Swift Current had another goal one second after a power-play ended.

17-year-old rookie Joel Hofer made 30 saves for his first WHL shutout.

Tavin Grant stopped 36 of 40 shots.

The 18-25-4-4 Cougars visit the 25-22-5 Regina Pats tonight.

They also play at Brandon Friday and Moose Jaw Saturday before returning home for games at the CN Centre February 9th and 10th against Kamloops.

The Prince George Spruce Kings have 10 regular season games left with nine of them against Mainland opponents.

They play their next five at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena (RMCA) and close with five on the road.

The Spruce Kings host the Chilliwack Chiefs Friday and Saturday.

The 25-15-4-4 Spruce Kings lead the Mainland Division by three points over Surrey, four over Langley and by nine over Chilliwack.

The Cariboo Cougars visit the Greater Vancouver Canadians Saturday at 5PM and Sunday at 10AM in Richmond.

With 10 regular season games remaining, the 23-5-2-0 Major Midget Cougars are in second place, just a point behind the 23-4-2-1 Valley West Hawks.

 

NHL:

Sven Baertschi scored at 1:07 of overtime.

Bo Horvat, Michael Del Zotto and Daniel Sedin also tallied for the 20-24-6 Canucks, while Chris Tanev added three assists.

The Avalanche lost Nathan MacKinnon to what appeared to be a shoulder injury in the second period.

MacKinnon is second in NHL scoring behind Tampa Bay’s Nikita Kucherov.

Dan Hamhuis of Smithers is the 106th defenceman and 314th NHL player to suit up in 1,000 NHL games.

The 35-year-old Hamhuis of the Dallas Stars hit the milestone Tuesday at home in a 3-0 loss to the Los Angeles Kings.

Hamhuis is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

 

NFL:

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to send quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins for what is reported to be a third-round draft pick and cornerback Kendall Fuller.

The trade, which can’t become official until the start of the league year on March 14th, allows the Redskins to part ways with previous starter Kirk Cousins.

ESPN is reporting Smith will sign a four-year extension with the Redskins, averaging $23.5 million per year with $71 million in guaranteed money.

 

HIGH JUMP:

Alyx Treasure of Prince George placed fourth with a leap of 1.87 metres in the women’s high jump, at an international track and field meet in Trinec, Czech Republic.

Eight were entered in the field.

The 25-year-old Treasure has a number of international competitions this year, including the Commonweath Games in April in Australia.

 

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

The UNBC Timberwolves have the bye on the final weekend of the Canada West basketball regular season.

Both UNBC teams are preparing for the playoffs which begin February 9th.

The UNBC men finished 10-10 while the Lady Timberwolves ended up 9-11.

 

NBA:

The 34-15 Raptors are just a game behind the Eastern Conference leading (36-15) Boston Celtics.

Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love is expected to miss six to eight weeks with a fracture in his left hand.

Love was injured in the Cavaliers 125-114 Tuesday night loss to the Detroit Pistons.

 

CANADIAN WOMEN’S CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS:

BC (Kesa Van Osch) is 3-3 after splitting a pair of games Tuesday at the National Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Penticton.

BC scored three in the 10th end to beat Ontario 6-5 in the morning draw but lost 11-1 to Alberta in the evening draw.

Alberta and Canada are the co-leaders in Pool B at 5-1.

Newfoundland/Labrador sits 4-2 followed by BC, Ontario and Quebec at 3-3.

The top four advance to the playoffs.

Manitoba tops Pool A at 5-0.

BC plays Newfoundland/Labrador this afternoon at 2.
